Dear Science resounds
When I first heard TV on the Radio almost four years ago I was a bit confused. Their debut full-length album, “Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes,” had garnered rave reviews from several notable sources. It seemed like the kind of album that comes out of nowhere and assumes a life of its own through critical praise. But when I listened to it I found myself decidedly unexcited about the whole thing.
All good things must come to an end
Be Your Own Pet: they sound just like you think. They’re independent, in your face and sassy. Each song throws their spunky-rock feel straight at you.
Reversible Jacket
As the lights dimmed at the Riverside Theater Friday night, the crowds emitted a cheer. The opening band made their way onto the stage while an old recording played. The first two songs were played with unparalleled determination and skill, while the vocals left much to be desired. I thought to myself, ‘For an opening band, they have a huge amount of stage presence and ability.’ It was into the third song before I realized it was not an opening band, but in fact, My Morning Jacket.
How to lose audiences and alienate critics
I must admit. I was extremely excited to see Simon Pegg’s latest comedic endeavor, “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People,” expecting something along the lines of “Shaun of the Dead” or “Hot Fuzz,” his hilarious collaborations with Edgar Wright and Nick Frost. As it turns out unfortunately, outside of that alliance and under the auspices of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” director Robert B. Weide, Pegg is a loveable fish out of water on bewildering ground.
A classic returns
With the release of Mega Man 9, gamers have a chance to take a step back from current-generation titles and enjoy one of the finer features of present day gaming: playing retro. While revisiting favorites from generations past certainly isn’t anything groundbreaking, playing an established series with an entirely new game is something wildly unheard of. The game, originally released for Nintendo Entertainment Systems, was released this time around for the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, as well as the PS3. While there are no distinguishing differences within the gameplay for each system, a player must ultimately decide which controller he/she feels most comfortable using.
Voice com etiquette
Let’s state the obvious right off the bat: videogames are competitive. Online matches that begin as friendly skirmishes can quickly turn to all-out war in a matter of simple re-spawns. Before you know it, your attention becomes effectively narrowed to fragging that little 12-year-old who stuck you with a plasma grenade.
Health Tips for Students: Fueling your mornings
Breakfast. It's the most important meal of every day. Yet far too many people put little thought into choosing what to eat for breakfast, if they eat any at all. Often students will grab a doughnut or muffin and think they've done a good job in giving their body proper nourishment. People who are trying to lose weight might think that skipping breakfast is the right move to cut calories, but unfortunately they are misinformed. Recent research also shows that they’re even doing their body a disservice with this choice, since one’s metabolism actually slows down when healthy food is not eaten in the morning.
Fresh Food Far From Appetizing
Here at UW-Milwaukee there is a diverse student population, with an equally diverse array of diets. These can range from organic, vegetarian, athletic and religious diets. Brian Vetter, Executive Chef of Restaurant Operations, says, "We try to accommodate all preferences and diets.”
Wong Kar-Wai Weekend
Wong Kar-Wai, the acclaimed director from Shanghai, will be honored this weekend (Oct. 9-12) with free showings of a triad of his latest works Thursday through Sunday at the UWM Union Theatre.
When the circus comes to town…
When Quebec street performers Guy Laliberte and Daniel Gauthier formed the basis for Cirque du Soleil in 1984, it would have been hard to fathom the immense global success the entertainment company currently enjoys. Now a full fledged worldwide entertainment company, Cirque du Soleil now finds itself comprised of over 15 unique resident and touring shows located all over the world.
“It’s cold outside, but it’s warm in here”
By all accounts, Frank Warren is another average middle-aged white guy with a wife and daughter from suburban Maryland. Yet, for more than three years now, he has received thousands of post cards from complete strangers detailing their deepest and darkest secrets.
ACT on your curiosity
Under the directive “ACT on your curiosity,” the Milwaukee Art Museum’s latest exhibit, ACT/REACT, is the perfect melding of art, technology and interaction. Not done in a childlike manner, such as the inference of “audience interaction,” the installments will delight visitors of any age.
Pop culture forays into adolescent adventure
Guilty-pleasure television seems to be in no short supply these days. With a slew of reality shows offered by each network and teen dramas sprouting up left and right, it’s natural to wonder what sort of staying power these shows present. Touted as the O.C. reincarnate, “Gossip Girl” comes all wrapped up in East Coast pomp, proving to skeptics that executive producer Josh Schwartz has a knack for drawing in the underage set, and may be sticking around for a few more seasons.
