If you’ve been watching the news lately, you may be aware of something called the Amethyst Initiative. Several prominent college presidents, representing such prestigious schools as Johns Hopkins, Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are currently calling for the lowering of the legal drinking age from 21 to 18. The Initiative, led by former Middlebury College President, John McCardell, is an effort to reduce disastrous binge drinking habits thought to be incited by taboos placed on alcohol consumption of underage college students.
