Give everyone liberty, or give me death

American wealth contributes to war and classism

By Danielle Johnson

A friend of mine confided that he cannot stand going to Bayshore Mall anymore because it is simply too much of “rich people getting what they want.” The all-too-common Bayshores, Starbucks, and SUV dealerships which dot the land lead me to believe that America itself is nothing more than “rich people getting what they want.”

The American motto “give me liberty or give me death” is the perfect summary of America’s contradictions and shortcomings. The phrase is shallow and infantile as written: “Give ME liberty” is rank with America’s egocentrism, which saw slavery side by side with free white men, and to this day treats gays as second-class citizens.

Question Limbaugh’s support

By Chris Walker

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh recently criticized soldiers who have returned from serving our country overseas who are also opposed to our presence in Iraq. He called these people “phony soldiers.”

The irony in the statement is not lost on me: One of the very conservative pundits whose arsenal of arguments includes the phrase “support the troops,” who uses that line of attack whenever his liberal counterparts try to have a reasonable argument with him, is only supportive of the troops that carry the same opinion as him.

The buck stops here

By Geoff Loper

It has been said that crime does not pay. But, when did it become a common standard that fighting crime beyond a scheduled shift would result in a doubled annual salary?

Last Sunday, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ran an article telling the story of five Milwaukee cops, (three detectives and two sergeants,) who basically doubled their annual take-home pay by logging an obscene amount of overtime hours.

Universal health care: Not a bad idea

By Chris Walker

Last week, President Bush vetoed a bill that would grant health care to millions of children across the nation. The bill would have called for $35 billion over five years to a child health care program already in place. Meanwhile, Bush and his Republican allies are seeking $190 billion dollars for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This veto has come at a very appropriate time. There has been much talk lately (among presidential candidates, filmmakers and everyday Americans alike) about instituting a single-payer health care system in the United States, for children as well as for adults. Such a system would ensure that every American could gain access to health care coverage, regardless of their ability to pay for insurance or not.
