Panthers heat up
Baseball goes 1-2 in trip to Florida
By Mike Kennedy
In the sixth earliest start in school history, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team started their season on Feb. 22. Though an earlier start to the season give them the preparation they need for Horizon League play, the Panthers went 1-2 in the Jacksonville Invitational.
Panther head coach Scott Doffek is in his second year as the skipper for Milwaukee, after taking over for Jerry Augustine at the start of last season, and has a large task ahead. After finishing with a program-best 25 wins last season Doffek is looking to take his preseason third-ranked Panthers to the NCAA Tournament.

Bracket Busted
It was an all too familiar scene. Just before tip-off it was announced one of the basketball players was out late the previous night, was arrested, and would not be participating in Saturday’s game. The only difference, this time it was the Panthers’ opponent that was getting into trouble off the court.
Bradley senior guard, and also the teams second leading scorer and leader in assists, Daniel Ruffin was suspended indefinitely before Saturday’s BracketBuster match up. Add his subtraction with that of third-leading scorer Andrew Warren, who is sidelined with a broken hand, and the Braves bench began to look a little depleted.

The next year is this year
For Milwaukee Brewer fans, 2008 is the year. No more saying next year or in a few years after players develop; the future is now. After 15 years of mediocrity and futility and 25 years of postseason-less baseball, much rides on this year.
Past drafts yielded an essentially an entire starting line-up of home-grown talent; only catcher Jason Kendall and suspended centerfielder Mike Cameron were acquired through free-agency. The team has a plethora of arms as eight pitchers must fit into five rotation slots. A revamped bullpen headlined by signing former all-star Eric Gagne should restore confidence in what was a previous weakness.

Nobody care-oids
We probably all knew right away. We probably just didn’t want to admit it. Back when Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa were knocking balls out of the park in jerseys that mysteriously no longer fit them, we just shrugged our shoulders and said our ooo’s and our ahh’s with everybody else.
The strike was years ago, we liked baseball again, and look at this! They’re both going to break a 37-year-old record in the same year! Amazing! All was well in the world, until somebody had to go and mention what everybody else had been too afraid to bring up.

Beyond the hyphen
For those of you who were around for the Great Name Debate of the spring of 2006, you may recall the intense campaigning that went on for the few weeks leading up to the April student elections.
If you’re an underclassman or a transfer who wasn’t here for that heavily polarizing debate, here’s the background.

Crew to start season Yovani-less
The Brewers organization has had plenty of experience with big time pitchers going down with injuries. This season it’s a little different, it’s not ace Ben Sheets.
Young right-hander Yovani Gallardo will have surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. The injury should keep him out four weeks.

Wild, Wild West
The first half of the NBA season was filled with surprises like the New Orleans Hornets and Portland Trailblazers. There also were some major disappointments like the Miami Heat who are worse then the Northwestern Wildcats basketball programs. Believe me, it’s hard to believe, but it’s true.
The Eastern Conference has featured a few dominate teams but also has a handful of teams fighting it out for the final two spots in the conference.
