Botham passes Borseth for No. 1 on all-time win list
By Jimmy Lemke
The Milwaukee Panthers were meeting for a bigger cause – the Think Pink event raising breast cancer awareness served a larger purpose – but there was something else that was special about the contest that might have been overlooked with all the other hoopla.
Sandy Botham, who has toiled on the Klotsche sidelines for over 10 years, passed former UW-Green Bay head coach Kevin Borseth for most victories in Horizon League women’s basketball history with their 76-70 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday.

Upset bid falls just short
Attempting to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss at Butler on Feb. 12, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s basketball team came out of the gates shooting lights out while the fans inside the U.S. Cellular Arena were as loud as ever.
The Bulldogs, a team that lives by the three, shot a miserable 28.6 percent from behind the arc. Key ingredients for a UWM upset of the 10th ranked team in the nation? Certainly. Unfortunately for the Panthers, this recipe only spelt heartbreak for a team that played one of its best games of the season Tuesday night, as they fell 83-75.

Feelin’ the pressure
It needed to be an all-around effort for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s basketball team to beat in-state rival University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and it was just that.
Five players contributed with eight or more points for Milwaukee, who battled back from a 12 point deficit at the start of the second half to walk away with a 10 point win, 65-55.

Comeback falls short
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s basketball team’s bid to complete the largest comeback in program history came up just short as they fell to Butler 75-73 Thursday night at the Klotsche Center.
The game, which was described by head coach Sandy Botham afterwards as “a story of two halves,” was completely accurate in describing the efforts of the Panthers as a whole.

That’s my Corey and I’m sticking to him
To use an analogy nobody’s ever used before, the free agent signing process in the NFL, much like the league’s draft, is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.
It’s hard to tell if that former first round defensive lineman is going to be a Ryan Pickett or a Joe Johnson, or if that veteran defensive back will be a Charles Woodson or a Marquand Manuel. It’s extremely difficult for the GM of a team to find players from others teams that will perform well in his team’s system, so it’s pretty much hit or miss.

What’s all the noise about?
Duke taking on North Carolina at Cameron Indoor Stadium and the arena is silent? Is this what we as a society have come to? Can fans no longer boo opponents?
What makes college basketball unique from the NBA is that its fans do not sit on their hands all night long. In most college arenas the student section stands for the entire game, shouting chants and cheers for the home team.

Spring Training with the Brew Crew
Expectations are running high for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008. The club was unable to parlay a 24-10 start into a division title as they finished two games behind the hated Chicago Cubs.
But after posting their first winning record (83-79) since 1992 with the core of their team under 25 years old, excitement in Wisconsin is at an all-time high. The club is putting a record 150 games on television and has already sold one million tickets faster than they ever have. Here’s what to look for just a day after pitchers and catchers report to the Phoenix, Ariz.

Men and women track succeed in Iowa
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s and women’s track team participated in the Iowa State Classic over the weekend, facing teams from all over the country. Held in Aimes, Ia., site of the Iowa St. campus, colleges such as Florida, Kansas, Madison, Nebraska and Arizona St. gave the meet a competitive and intense feel.
“It was a good cross-section of schools from around the nation”, said UWM track head coach Pete Corfeld. “It was tough competition with so many big colleges there, but I look at that as the glass being half full as it sets the bar high for competition.”
