Where has our leader gone?

Each one of us faces decisions every day of our lives and some of them are far more important than others. Am I going to go to class today? Which place are we going to dinner tonight? Where should I buy my shoes? These questions pale in comparison to the decision that currently lies before Gov. Jim Doyle: Should he go to China or stay at home and work with state lawmakers on the budget?

Parents overreact

The parental tirades in the Sept. 4 issue of The Post are misguided and out of touch with modern student life. As one parent wrote in, many college freshmen are “vulnerable, impressionable, and easily misled.” However, parents who choose to continue coddling their college-bound children are crippling their children.

I have advocated a comprehensive transportation policy at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to take the lead in addressing the parking issue, and today am announcing 10 options to help prevent an excessive number of parking tickets that we anticipate being issued with many of our new and returning students at UWM in need of transportation options.

Smoking ban: overkill

Last winter I wrote a column arguing for the university to install a smoking room somewhere on campus so that those who choose to smoke can do so without feeling like complete social rejects, and so that they won’t get frostbite when they are indulging in their habit. Naturally, my viewpoint was unpopular, the column faded into oblivion and I was content to leave it at that.
