Pep band brings the noise

By Mitch Gallagher

What makes college basketball so intense? Sure, the players pour out their very best efforts every time they take the floor, as opposed to the overpaid whiners in the NBA. But the thing that truly separates the college basketball experience from the professional experience is the undying support of their school’s team from the fans, particularly the students.

When you think about what brings college basketball its unique aura, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the band. The band is the epitome of support for the team and gets the rest of the crowd into the game.

Best of the beasts

By Mike McMillan

Many people are attracted to college sports for the athletic talent and competition between rival schools. Sure, all that stuff is interesting and great to cheer for, but what about the athletes of the sidelines? Yes, the mascots.

These are the student athletes who get the fans pumped up with their athletic tumbling skills and arm power, tossing out T-shirts. I guess you could say that this is a follow up to last week's top five freshmen article, but these athletes are far superior in talent and have much more experience than the freshmen.

Eyes on the Brew Crew

By John Raschig

With the Milwaukee Brewers organization and its growing fan base legitimately expecting big things this year, a once nationally-forgotten franchise seems to be once again getting exposure.

With at least one publication picking them to win the National League Central in 2008 and another to secure a wild-card berth, years of intelligent drafts and wise trades are manifesting themselves into expectations and notoriety. Fox, the television company that showcases their “game of the week” on Saturday afternoons, picked up four Milwaukee Brewers games, something unheard of in recent memory.

NFL off-season calendar

By Brett Winkler

With apologies to the Pro Bowl buffs of the world, the 2007 NFL season officially ended on Sunday. That means no more broken records, no more resurgent graying quarterbacks, no more Philip Rivers acting like a punk, no more teams going for perfection (or imperfection), and, thankfully, no more Cris Collinsworth. Until next year, at least.

Theft from Campus

By Jimmy Lemke

Every gameday on campus, whether it be for men's soccer or women's basketball or baseball out at Henry Aaron Field, Kris Heijnen gets to work early. Kris is the full-time intern for the athletic department's marketing section, and full-time just doesn't really explain how much work he does. His routine on gamedays is simple; do what you can to get the students to the games. In the morning, that entails lugging around a dozen or so A-frames, advertising the game, to certain high-traffic spots on campus. He can't be 12 places at once, but these can. Now, even the A-Frames can't do it. Why?

Because since the beginning of the school year, seven athletics A-frames have been stolen on campus. Some jokers must have thought that it would be hilarious to steal one of the only means of letting students know about sporting events. Heijnen isn't laughing.

Phoenix Soar Past Panthers

By Tim Prahl

All five University of Wisconsin-Green Bay starters scored in double figures as the Phoenix defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s basketball team 79-64.

Going into the game ranked as the top two teams in to conference, fans filled the Klotsche Center Saturday afternoon expecting to see a nail biter. The Panther faithful were disappointed though, as Green Bay set the tone early and took a twelve-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
