No. 13 Marquette shoots past Milwaukee
Panthers spark early, fall late
By Mike Kennedy
A trip across the street to the Bradley Center has been on the minds of Panther fans for almost a decade, but when the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee finally got its shot at Marquette the result was disappointing.
The Panthers (3-4) were held to just 39.3 percent shooting in the game while the Golden Eagles (5-1) hit just over 54 percent of their shots in the Panther loss Friday night, 100-65.

Flatland flattening
Domination might be an understatement.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men and women’s swimming teams came back from the Wheaton Invitational with victories more lopsided than Quasimodo’s back.

The start of a rivalry?
Some may say the cross-town match up between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette men’s basketball teams is a rivalry, while others will argue that to be a rivalry games would have to consist of equal competition.
Neither happens to be the case between the Golden Eagles and the Panthers, two completely opposite schools and athletic programs. UWM is just dabbling in a pond of mid-majors while Marquette is starting to show life in the newly rebuilt Big East while also holding a position in the national top 25.

Story of a Panther, part 3
The basketball team seemed like a long-distant memory. The only path that mattered was the one laid in front of him. Joe Allen, along with his battalion, trained hard. Their orders would make them some of the first American troops to land in Iraq.
In late March of 2003, Joe’s unit and thousands of American troops boarded planes bound for the Middle East. For the first week he was there, Joe was stationed at Camp New York in Kuwait, the country bordering Iraq to the south, and the focus of the Gulf War.

It’s raining 3s
Though the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s basketball team has fought back in their last two outings after being down by 15 and 10, the Panthers couldn’t comeback against Drake last Saturday night, losing 80-59.
“We’ve been putting together 20 minutes of solid basketball, tonight I don’t know if we put up five minutes of solid basketball,” said Panther head coach Rob Jeter. “It’s none other than as a head coach getting these guys ready to play and getting them to do things that we ask.”

Loss stings but a long way to go
Fifty-two days. That’s how much time is in between Green Bay’s 37-27 loss in Dallas in the NFC game of the year on Thursday night and a very possible rematch in the NFC championship.
Translation for football fans everywhere anticipating that there is no doubt the championship game will be Green Bay at Dallas part II: stop getting ahead of yourselves for the love of God. A lot can happen between now and then.

No comeback in sight
It has plagued the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s basketball team in each of its games so far this season. The Panthers struggle in the first half and come out strong in the second; Tuesday night was no different.
The same scenario was played out against Sam Houston State: the Panthers dropped their third straight to the undefeated Bearkats, 81-77, at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

Parity party
Yes, the New England Patriots are a pretty good football team. At 11-0 coming into the season’s 13th week, it’s a realistic possibility that they can even go undefeated. So why, then, were the lowly Eagles just one smart decision by A.J. Feeley away from knocking them off last Monday night?
Maybe, it’s because the Patriots were simply overlooking a .500 opponent playing without its starting quarterback. Maybe, as a record 89-point favorite to beat Philly, the Pats got in their own heads. Maybe it was just a case of never knowing what will happen on Any Given Sunday (or Monday, Thursday or Saturday).

Barroid Bonds indicted
On Nov. 15, former San Francisco left-fielder Barry Bonds was indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, stemming from a years-long federal probe that examined his use of steroids.
A look at Bonds now compared to him ten years ago provides at least superficial evidence for extensive steroid use; he gained 50 pounds, his shoe size increased by three and his hat size increased by 1 1/2, although that last one could also be contributed to his inflated ego.

Panther women fall in heartbreaker
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s basketball team fell to a 1-3 record after dropping a heartbreaker in overtime to the University of Miami, losing 73-70 on Wednesday night.
Traci Edwards led the Panthers with her usual double-double of 21 points and 10 boards, however, it was not enough to overcome the Panthers’ 32 turnovers.

Lone star QB’s roots lie in Packer country
When people hear the name “Burlington,” hopefully they will no longer ask the question: the coat factory?
The little-known city in Wis. shares the name of a popular coat factory which, contrary to popular belief, is not actually in the city of Burlington. A certain gunslinger playing football in the lone star state should change the reference.

Bucks streak sign of things to come
The Bucks got off to a slow start, but a recent five-game winning-streak may be a sign of what to expect from the Bucks this season. The season may be long, but the Bucks’ starters and bench players are starting to adjust to their roles on this team.
One of the main reasons for the Bucks starting to play better ball is the performance of Charlie Villanueva. Villanueva has provided great energy and is making big shots for the Bucks off the bench. He has been scoring more then 15 points per game over the last two weeks.
