Good will toward Wal-Mart

Christmas comes with wrong attitudes

By Joshua McCracken

“Deck the halls with lots of money, fat fat fat fat…” Is anybody else sick of Christmas already? I am. The sad thing is, I used to love the holiday. The sadder thing is; I was sick of Christmas before Halloween even came.

The holiday of Christmas is cheap enough as it is; just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, people began preparing for it well over six weeks in advance.

Impeachment not feasible

By Chris Walker

The word “impeachment” sends a tingly sensation of joy down the spine of any die-hard anti-Bush enthusiast. On the other end of the spectrum, you can usually expect a roll of the eyes from a die-hard conservative who still supports the president (though they are thinning in numbers).

Recently, Democratic Representative and Presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich submitted a resolution to Congress calling for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney. That resolution was placed in committee, effectively killing it for now.

The politics of Pat Robertson

By Amanda Moucha

Televangelist and social conservative Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition and “The 700 Club,” raised a few eyebrows when he announced his support for Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani.

Giuliani is struggling to win support from social conservatives because of his liberal views on abortion and gay rights, views that conflict with conservative orthodoxy.

‘One Nation Under God’

By Johanan Raatz

A while ago I heard about a man named Michael Newdow filing a suit to have “under God” removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. He argued that it violated the principle of separation of church and state.

I’m not sure this was the original intent of the Founding Fathers. The Founding Fathers were mostly Christians and Deists. Adherents of both systems believed God existed, but at that time Deism was considered to be secular.

The politics of origins

By Johanan Raatz

Let me begin by briefly stating my positions regarding evolution, creationism and intelligent design. Though I grew up as a creationist, I came to realize that evolution explains the evidence in ways creationism simply can’t.

Creationism can’t explain why the dozen or so Tyrannosaur fossils have been found exclusively in late-Cretaceous strata. If the fossils were buried in the flood they would be spread out through many strata.

Avoiding catastrophe with Iran

By Jeff Flashinski and Marlyn Fink

Recently, President Bush said Iran’s nuclear threat presents us with a danger of World War III. I agree about the danger of this conflict, but I do not think the main culprit is Iran. Let’s pick apart some of the common themes used by the media here.

The U.S. government claims that the Iranian regime is brutal and oppressive. These claims are true, but does the U.S. government care whether regimes are brutal and oppressive?

Marx for democracy

By Nathan Johnson

While capitalism can exist under dictatorships and so-called democracies alike, it would be incorrect to say the same of socialism, which necessitates a democratically planned economy and collectively owned means of production.

As Lenin said, “Socialism is impossible without democracy because: (1) the proletariat [the working class] cannot perform the socialist revolution unless it prepares for it by the struggle for democracy; (2) victorious socialism cannot consolidate its victory and bring humanity to the withering away of the state without implementing full democracy.”

Cheers and Jeers - 11/19/07

By Amanda Moucha

Cheers to University of Pittsburgh scientists who discovered curvy women, defined as having waists smaller than their hips, are smarter, give birth to smarter children and live longer. Scientists found fat in the thighs and hips has higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids which is vital to brain growth during pregnancy, while waist fat is a contributing factor to heart disease and diabetes. Thus curvy women live longer.
Jeers to Congress for readdressing the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act. Surveillance in the United States originally required a court order to protect Americans’ privacy. The law now allows the government to eavesdrop without court approval, as long as one end of the conversation is located in the U.S.
Cheers to an “Anonymous Friend” who donated $100 million to the Erie Community Foundation charity in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Honor our veterans

By Timothy Sienko

Milwaukee residents gathered on Nov. 10 for the Veterans’ Day Parade. The 44th annual celebration was marked by events across the community, including air salutes, a performance by a baton twirling corps and the community orchestra, free admission for all veterans to the Milwaukee Art Museum and, of course, the parade.

Red poppies with the catch phrase “Lest We Forget” adorned lapels. The parade committee named the prisoners of war and those missing in action as the special guests of honor, declaring, “You are not forgotten.”

Abortion piece full of Ignorance

By Zach Popp

Once again I have been greatly saddened by the ignorance and overuse of propaganda-caliber rhetoric that has been spewed onto the pages of your newspaper by Joshua McCracken. His latest position on abortion shows little critical thinking and is mostly a conglomeration of the twisted arguments so commonly regurgitated by pro-abortion advocates.

Our constitution was designed to protect the liberties and free-will choices of all Americans; yet only a fool would fall into the trap of viewing abortion as an issue of women’s rights or freedom of choice. Religious texts, logic, history and science clearly declare a baby in utero as a life worthy of recognition, rights and protection.

From the Web - 11/19/07

Posted by Rose Wasielewski on Nov 14, 2007 at 12:30 PM:

I’m very disheartened by the approach taken with this “article” (“Laundry-lifting a bad idea,” Nov. 12). I have worked with University Housing in many positions over my entire career as a student and found that your article was not only misleading, but also showed a lacking sense of common decency that seems to be permeating our society.
