Championship left in the hands of a shootout

Back-to-back OT’s leave Panther women with at-large hopes

By Mike McMillan

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s soccer team faced two different outcomes in back-to-back double overtime games. With a win against Butler, the Panthers advanced to the championship game against Loyola, but after double overtime and a shootout loss, the women’s hopes are holding strong at the possibility of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In the first game against Butler, senior Pam Shipway did not seem rattled as she tied the game with an amazing header in the 80th minute.

Newcomers shine in season opener

By Mike Kennedy

Panthers head coach Rob Jeter is now 3-0 all-time in home-openers after the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s basketball team controlled the pace of play against Division II Upper Iowa University for a 78-53 win.

The Panthers (1-0) were picked to finish in fourth place in the preseason Horizon League poll. Jeter has a wide array of talent, as displayed by 11 players who were on the court for more than 10 minutes. In all, 14 players saw time in the opener, the 15th being freshman Brad Carroll who Jeter claimed will be redshirting this season in order to have four years of eligibility starting in the 2008-09 season.

Story of a Panther’s journey

By Jimmy Lemke

He was standing outside, two storefronts looming over him. Joe Allen, a former high school basketball player at Whitnall High School in Greenfield, had run out of options. No college wanted him. He was at a crossroads, about to make arguably the biggest decision of his life since the time he figured it might be a good idea to come out of the womb.

Since finishing at Whitnall in June, Allen had no plan for his future. He was working at a liquor store to make money, but that’s no long-term career and, Joe knew it.

Rush to judgment

By Ken Ryan

Plenty of credit should go around for the tremendous 7-1 record of the Green Bay Packers.

There’s been the return to greatness by Brett Favre; the Packers have a receiving core of Donald Driver, Greg Jennings and James Jones that is entering the NFL’s elite; Donald Lee and Bubba Franks have made the tight end position relevant again; middle linebacker Nick Barnett is having a career year; cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson are getting recognized as the top duo in the league.

Panther women’s basketball showing early strength

By Mike Kennedy

Though the season is only two games underway, and both of those being exhibition games, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s basketball team looks prepared to take the Horizon League title back.

The Panthers have outscored their opponents by an average of 53 points. With junior leaders Traci Edwards, Turquoise McCain and Jody Crumble, they have dominated their exhibition opponents on offense and defense, and look to carry that into the regular season.

Bucks’ early season weakness

By Steve Manske

A week into the season, the Milwaukee Bucks have shown one glaring problem: They don’t shoot the ball well on a consistent basis. If the Bucks are going to be a playoff team at the end of this season they had better start taking better shots and improving their team shooting percentage.

The Bucks are shooting a decent 45 percent from the field, but it’s only resulted in scores in the low 90s, game in and game out. The NBA is an offensive league, and with numbers like these you will find yourself at the losing end of the court on many nights.

Panther men lose final game of season

By Tim Prahl

A single goal ruined the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s soccer team’s hopes of taking home all three trophies they play for, as they lost Tuesday night at Northern Illinois University, 1-0.

With the LeWang Cup, taken home by NIU last season, up for grabs, neither team found their niche in the first half, as both teams went to the locker room without having found the back of the net.

Which pitchers the Brewers should want

By John Raschig

The Milwaukee Brewers enter the offseason as one of the more intriguing storylines following the 2007 baseball season. With plenty of young talent mixed in with a couple of battle-tested veterans, overall the Brew Crew seems well-suited to make a playoff run, especially with one more year of experience under everyone’s belts.

With what is arguably the best young infield in baseball and unquestionably the best corner tandem in the league, a division title seems to shine on the horizon. Yet clearly holes exist, or else they would have at least met Boston in the World Series. Most of those shortcomings come in the area that every team seems to lack: starting pitching and middle relief.

16 and oh who cares

By Brett Winkler

Since nobody else in the national media is paying any attention at all to the New England Patriots, we thought The UWM Post ought to be the first to thrust the 9-0 Pats into the national spotlight.

Did you know the Patriots could go undefeated this year? Did you know Tom Brady could break Peyton Manning’s touchdown record? Did you know Randy Moss is good again after two years of not really trying that hard?

The wave keeps rolling

By Brady Holden

The University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin men and women’s swimming teams won three out of four match-ups against UIC, Butler and North Dakota in Chicago on Saturday. While the women strolled past UIC and Butler, the men split theirs meets, losing 161-138 to UIC and beating North Dakota 159-139.

The women, winning both of their match-ups by wide margins, saw leadership from the whole team. Juniors Molly Finn and Ashley Hall each won in their swimming and diving events. Finn won both the 400 IM and 200 butterfly and placed second in the 100 fly with her season best time, 0:59.17. Diving strong in both events, Hall won them both, something she has now done three times this season.
