All-Pro Football 2K8

By Marty Sliva

The moment I heard that there was going to be a football videogame comprised of the legends, I immediately got excited. The possibilities of reliving my glory days of Tecmo Bowl with an unstoppable Bo Jackson got the nostalgic juices flowing. Sadly, this imaginary point is where “All-Pro Football 2K8” reached its peak. Upon playing the actual game, my opinion went nowhere but down.

Upon starting the game, you’ll be prompted to begin drafting your team of legends and imaginary players. That’s right; imaginary players. You only get to draft 11 actual legends. The rest of your positions are filled out by randomized mooks.

Wait ‘til next year

By Jimmy Lemke

So here I am, sitting in my friend’s house, waiting for Madden 2008 to load on Playstation 3. He’s got a 52-inch flat screen TV with HD capabilities, and he tells me that Madden in HD is unbelievable.

The introduction comes on the screen, and it’s not only introducing me to the 2008 installment, but to the capabilities of the new platform. I’m sucked in, and it’s only the introduction video.

Giving soccer a little bit of electricity

By Sean Quast

Let me start off by saying that I hate the sports games of today. They are becoming less and less about game play and more about micro-managing your someday Enron-sized sports corporation that is all about the money. Do I really care how much I am charging my fans for a fricking hotdog with no stadium sauce—hell no.

So thank the gods that Nintendo and its Wii are putting the “sports” back into sports games. “Wii Sport” greatly showcased how the system can really be like real sports games. “Mario Strikers: Charged” is a really great hybrid of old directional-controlled button-based games and Wii action elements.

Music to my ears

By Marty Sliva

Satisfaction is something that was severely lacking in the world of film this summer. With a string of disappointing sequels and remakes, moviegoers left the theaters in record numbers, with record apathy. However, a tiny Irish film shot on digital video with unknown actors managed to completely captivate audiences and prove that something amazing can still exist in the barren wastelands of the summer movie season.

“Once” follows a street musician known only as “Guy” (played by real-life musician Glen Hansard), as he attempts to earn a few extra bucks on the streets of Dublin. Through what can be described as divine intervention, his path crosses with that of a young Czech immigrant known only as “Girl” (played by real-life singer and first time actress Markéta Irglová).

Roger Ebert loves his video games

By Marty Sliva

Video games are a tricky thing. They are members of an infant medium when compared with film and television, yet have garnered a following that rivals that of any other form of entertainment. However, the mainstream media still doesn’t give them the respect that they deserve.

Prominent film critic, Roger Ebert, is notorious for his firm stance against videogames being considered an art-form. When the single most renowned film critic in the world criticizes a medium, people tend to listen.

Truth in advertising

By Melissa Campbell

When I read reviews that called “Superbad” (R, 114 min.) the “American Graffiti” of our generation, I was taken aback. Those are some mighty big shoes to fill. Needless to say, I went into “Superbad” with high hopes, and much to my delight, I was not disappointed. “Superbad” is a balance of crass humor and delicate humanity, a film that is simultaneously honest and absurd in its portrayal of adolescence.

“Superbad” is the story of two inseparable high school seniors, Evan (Michael Cera, “Arrested Development”), and Seth (Jonah Hill, “Knocked Up”), on a mission to score booze and a lay for the party of the year.
