Panthers dominate the weekend

Volleyball loses only one game in three matches

Those women are really in a groove. Riding a four-match winning streak coming into last week, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team rolled through Oral Roberts, Cleveland State and Youngstown State to stretch their streak to seven.

UWM last lost to Loyola University, in Chicago on Oct. 6.

Becky Peters is defensive guru

Following in the footsteps of volleyball teammates Cheryl Hegemann, Leanne Felsing and Melissa David, sophomore libero Becky Peters was named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week.

Peters, ranked No. 14 on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s volleyball all-time Division I list for digs, has just gotten her 249th dig for the fall volleyball season as of Oct. 14 — still early in the season.

Recording her 25th shutout of her career, a Horizon League record, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee sophomore Erin Kane led the UWM Panthers to a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin on Sunday.

The cup comes home

Not even the weather can stop the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s soccer team these days.

After the game against the UW-Green Bay Phoenix originally scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed to Thursday afternoon, it only proved to delay what appears to now be inevitable — the Panthers just cannot lose.

Off the springboard

P.J. Rongitsch may be one of the most talented people you'll meet at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

He was the starting long snapper for the Eastview (Minn.) High School football team, spent three years on his school's honor roll and also played guitar for a popular Eagan, Minn.-based rock band named "Harbor."

Marquette, UWM stalemate in basketball negotiations

Both sides finally agreed. It seemed as though it was inevitable.

At last, Marquette and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee were going to meet on the hardwood. The successful men’s basketball programs from each Division I university in Milwaukee had reached a consensus on a series that would begin next season at the Bradley Center.

Division 2 may be the best in prep football

Many students remember the bright lights on those chilly Friday nights. It’s about that time of the year again for all of the high school football teams in Wisconsin to begin their journey to Camp Randall in search of that golden ball.

Each team is now only four wins away from making the trip. Of 238 football teams that made the playoffs, only 14 will have the opportunity of playing in front of thousands on live television, and only seven will have the pleasure to hold that state championship trophy over their heads. It’s either win, or go home.

Packers harpoon Dolphins

For the second week in a row, the Green Bay Packers didn’t lose. As an added bonus, this week, they played a game.

Fresh off their bye week, the Packers beat the Miami Dolphins in a 34-24 shootout, earning the first victory at Dolphin Stadium in the team’s history.

Admirals sink Manitoba

Led by a stellar defensive performance, the Milwaukee Admirals put together their first Bradley Center victory Friday night against the Manitoba Moose to even their record at 2-2 in the young season.

Goalie Scott Reid made 24 saves to post his first ever American Hockey League shutout and helped lead the Admirals to a 2-0 win.
