McFarland junior commits to UWM

After posting a 22-9 record in his first season as head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee mens basketball team, Rob Jeter was in for a rough campaign this past year.

Losing seven seniors, the Panthers sputtered to a 9-22 record, leaving Jeter at 31-31 on his career. However, theres always an upside to bad seasons, and Jeter has been building a team stacked with recruits he has brought into the fold.

Aced out

Ben Sheets has not lived up to expectations as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.

After leading the USA to a gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, there were high hopes for the young pitcher, who was thought to be the Brewers ace of the future. However, a number of injuries and inconsistent pitching has made Sheets an average pitcher at best.

Baseball splits with Cleveland State

Junior Grant Berkovitz drove in the winning run in the eighth inning to give the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers the lead and eventually the win in the second game of a doubleheader against Cleveland State.

Andy Hetebrueg started the second game for the Panthers (9-22 overall, 8-8 Horizon League), lasted until the seventh inning and gave up only four hits and one run while he struck out two in the 2-1 win.

Student athletes excel in classroom

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee landed a league-high 12 student athletes on the Winter Academic All-Horizon League team, officials announced last Tuesday.

Spring progress

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee mens soccer team played to a scoreless draw against rival Marquette University April 15 at Valley Field. The tie puts the Panthers spring season record at 2-3-1, with four games left to play.

Sophomore keeper Grant Fernstrum anchored the defense, as the Panthers recorded their third clean sheet of the spring season.

The Milwaukee Bucks schedule is over, but their season was realistically done about a month ago.

Following the loss to Toronto at the Bradley Center on March 12, coach Terry Stotts was fired and former Bucks player Larry Krystkowiak assumed the role of head coach.

When it comes to the NFL, the only thing more exciting to watch than the Super Bowl and its commercials is the NFL Draft. Its a time for teams to think to the future, restock their rosters and begin a new season filled with talent and hope.

For fans the NFL Draft is a time for prayer and hope that their team will draft that running back or wide receiver and not the defensive end with the first pick in the draft (smooth move Houston).

Countdown to an early Christmas

  1. The deepest position is wide receiver. Not only does the position have the best overall player in Calvin Johnson, it is filled with first round candidates in Ted Ginn Jr., Dwayne Jarrett, Robert Meachem and Dwayne Bowe.
  2. Only Sconnie Lock is Joe Thomas. The only for-sure Badger to be drafted is tackle Joe Thomas, who likely will go top five. Quarterback John Stocco could go in the late rounds. The good news is the Badgers will return 18 of 24 starters to their 2007 squad.
  3. The Pack will draft a running back early. Green Bay“s odds-on first-round pick is running back Marshawn Lynch of Cal. If not him, they should take a back in round two.
