Storytelling isn“t just for kindergarten

StoryCorps gives Milwaukee an opportunity to tell its story

The phrase “tell me a story” got a new connotation for Milwaukee residents on Jan. 25 when StoryCorps opened an outpost StoryBooth in Milwaukee. This is the third StoryBooth in the nation, and the first outside New York City.

StoryCorps, located in the Oriental Room of Milwaukee“s Central Library, is a small sound-proof booth with professional recording equipment that will be open until July 25.

A spin on Belgian cuisine

I always thought of Downer Avenue as a Saturday morning kind of street. Families taking their kids on walks with the dog down the picturesque avenue on a sunny day. On the way stopping at Starbucks for an espresso, Harry W. Schwartz Bookshop for the latest best seller and Sendik“s for the fresh fruit of the season.

Now, ever since December 2006, Downer Avenue can add one more hotspot to its list: Café Hollander.

If you were like me growing up, you were entertained by your imagination. Playtime was made all that much more fun by imaginary friends and your favorite TV characters. Two of those shows may have been “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “The Mighty Morphin“ Power Rangers.”

Both of these shows have a deep, rich history of toys, games and mega-fame among kids. But only one can be crowned champion, so let“s get to it, shall we?

When you feel the music then feel yourself

There are many different kinds of music out there that have an array of different affects on one“s psyche. There are songs for romance, songs for broken hearts, songs for bad days, hope, lust, you name it. One group of songs that often goes ignored, or quietly giggled about, is songs about masturbation.

When you are feeling down, try picking yourself up by listening to a song about feeling yourself up. There are a million out there. Songs that you may not have guessed were about self-gratification and songs that are very obvious about their subject matter both have a place on my list. Whether the lyrics put a smile on my face or the suggested activity does, I“m smiling at the end of a bad day.

Yes, it“s another diet pill

Gossip magazines are quick to praise the newest fad diet that helped a celebrity lose a seemingly impossible amount of weight; every other TV commercial is for Trim Spa or some other miracle weight loss supplement that promises to help you lose a monumental amount of weight in time for swim suit season.

The reality is weight loss is something that takes time. It does not happen overnight and for a lot of people, a diet alone is not enough. About two-thirds of American adults are overweight, which makes weight loss is a serious issue that needs serious attention.

Research Ruminations

By using advances in technology and money from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Research Growth Initiative, Sergey Kravtsov will study longer-term projects.

Kravtsov“s one-year research project, “Effects of Eddies onto Decadal Variability of Large-Scale Ocean Currents and Climate,” will facilitate longer term and larger scale studies. Eddies are small-scale fluctuations of oceanic currents and temperature fields, he says.
