Offense missing in blowout loss to top Horizon team

Hinkle Fieldhouse, home to the No. 13 team in the country, seemed to be a bad place for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers men“s basketball team to start its two-game road trip.

The Butler Bulldogs (22-2, 10-1 Horizon) topped the Panthers (8-17, 5-7) 66-47 on Feb. 3 in a game that should inevitably secure the Bulldogs a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Without upperclassmen, Panthers survive

Despite the absence of all six upperclassmen, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women“s basketball team got back in the win column Thursday night with a 63-54 victory over the University of Detroit at the Klotsche Center.

Traci Edwards once again led the way for the Panthers, playing without the team“s second- and third-leading scorers in Aubrey Hampton and Meredith Onson. The sophomore center scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds en route to her ninth double-double of the year.

Panthers escape in OT

In what will probably be remembered as one of the uglier contests of the 2006-2007 season, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men“s basketball team squeaked out a 57-56 overtime victory over Cleveland State University at the U.S. Cellular Arena Jan. 29.

In a game in which the Panthers never trailed, but saw the team surrender leads three times in the second half, UWM had just enough juice to take care of business in the extra period to avoid what would have been an embarrassing home defeat.

Men, women destroy UWM track records

As the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men“s track and field team flexed its muscles, the women“s team decided to show off its fancy footwork as both teams competed in the Madison Elite Invitational on Jan. 27.

For the men, junior Larry Erhorn claimed top honors in both the shot put and weight throw. Erhorn heaved the shot put just three-fourths of an inch in front of senior teammate Nick Wichert.

Tennis falls in downtown visit

In college athletics, experience counts. It is something coaches cannot coach and players can only acquire by battling as hard as possible.

Unfortunately for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team Jan. 28, a part of the growing process is going on the road to face a more experienced lineup. Despite a tremendous effort, they came up short.
