First-week woes

Walking into class after any break is a moment of excitement and trepidation for me.
Will I like the class? Will I like my professor and classmates? Every semester I go through the same problem. Inevitably, there will be at least one issue with my syllabus.

Demand climate accountability
The words “global warming” can be misleading, especially during winter in Wisconsin. Nothing about an 8 a.m. walk to school will show evidence of any “warming.” Frozen mucus and salt-entrenched shoes are hardly signs of change in our earth’s temperature, especially towards a sense of warmness.
A more proper term to use would be “global climate change” because essentially, that’s what it is. Not every spot on earth is becoming warmer due to global climate change; in fact, some places are getting cooler.

Is the MPS cell phone ban needed?
I remember hearing the same annoying phrase every time I used to ride with my grandma. “When I went to school I had to walk 14 miles everyday even if it snowed or rained.”
Today is much different than those prehistoric times. There are many more dangers and more often than not our world is unsafe. A youngster roaming the street risks encounters with scum such as sexual offenders or other dangerous people.

Put that down and learn
Milwaukee Public Schools’ Superintendent William Andrekopoulos recently told MPS principals to ban all cell phones in schools.
The decision was made after several incidences of violence with “backup” called in via cell phone. If a student is seen with a cell phone, it could be confiscated. If a student uses a phone to in any way harm others (i.e. call someone for reinforcement in a fight, take locker room pictures, etc.) the student could be expelled.

Upon reading the headline, “Show pride through attendance” (Jan. 22), I anticipated an article that discussed the benefits of showing up to class and the pitfalls of sleeping in. Instead, my fellow students and I were “called out” with Bill O'Reilly worthy acumen.
