Panthers payback Flames for last year’s home loss

Men step up play in conference games

As many suspected the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers have struggled a little at the beginning of the season, but they have stepped up to a little more than expected over the campus winter break.

The men’s basketball team has shown some power and potential in the six games they played over break.

Familiar surroundings

Upon entering Horizon League play the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s basketball team stood on shaky ground. Due in large part to a tough non-conference schedule, the Panthers held an overall record of 4-9 and were riding a disappointing three-game losing streak.

A painful predicament

After ringing in the new year with five straight losses, the Milwaukee Bucks finally got their first win of 2007 on the year’s 15th day — but with a considerably different lineup than they’re accustomed to.

Milwaukee ended its longest losing streak of the season with a victory over the Charlotte Bobcats, despite missing four of five projected starters from the training camp depth chart.

The rust is off

Sitting out for a year away from basketball is a very tough thing to take. When Ricky Franklin was declared academically ineligible to begin playing basketball his freshman year in 2005, that meant a season off the hardwood for an extremely talented player.

Franklin flew under the radar for most of his high school career, but a phenomenal senior campaign, in which he was named City Conference Player of the Year, led Franklin to earn a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Track teams take top places at Kenosha meet

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s and women’s track team’s both got off on the right foot in 2007 after finishing second and third, respectively, at the Division I Invite in Kenosha.

The men’s team notched seven wins and 153 points to help pave the way for their second-place finish in the season opener. Marquette won the event with 194 points while the other Division I school, DePaul, placed third in the six-team field with 109.5.
