Ann Arbor escape

Michigan barely holds off Panthers

By Curtis Claassen

If there was ever a case of a moral victory, this might be it. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s basketball team definitely made a statement that they can play with the big boys after falling just short last week to the University of Michigan, 61-57.

Avery Smith led the way for the Panthers with 23 points, but it was not enough to overcome the 26-point performance by Michigan’s Courtney Sims in Ann Arbor, Mich.

A good learning experience

By Andy Egelhoff

Entering their final game of the John Thompson Foundation Classic on Sunday night, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers basketball team had one win and one loss under its belt and were optimistic about its match against the bigger University of Alabama-Birmingham team.

Unfortunately for them, optimism doesn’t always translate into victories, as UAB soundly defeated UWM 75-60.

Take advantage, students

By Jimmy Lemke

If you were expecting the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s basketball team to come fast out of the gate and coast through the regular season on its way to another berth in the NCAA Tournament, you’re just being naive.

If you aren’t coming to games because you don’t want to watch the team lose, then you’re not naive. You’re just plain stupid.

The Horizon League Tournament started on Friday, Nov. 17, against Youngstown State in a match in which UWM pulled away with a three-game win (30-26, 30-25, 30-19). Cheryl Hegemann, a 6-foot-1-inch senior middle blocker, had 13 kills against the Penguins, followed by senior outside hitter Melissa David (12), junior Jamie Gabrielsen (11) and senior Sarah Moore (10).

Just short of paradise

By Mike Kennedy

Scoring in the low 70s doesn’t seem to work for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s basketball team.

The Panthers lost to the University of Miami 71-78 on Monday, and started the weekend off with a loss at Drake University on Friday night, 75-72.

Camp Randall suspense

By Zach Clark

Nobody can honestly say that they’ve seen it all this past Friday at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletics Association State Championship football games.

There were nail biters and blowouts, shootouts and shutouts, and even a few broken records.

Michael is Redd hot

By Brett Winkler

It didn’t make Wilt Chamberlain turn in his grave, nor did it force Kobe Bryant to lose any sleep, but Michael Redd’s 57-point performance in a losing effort to the Utah Jazz on Nov. 11 caught the attention of the NBA world.

Redd set the Milwaukee Bucks’ record for most points in a game, eclipsing the previous mark of 55 held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Unfortunately, a last-second three-point attempt hit the back of the rim, keeping Redd from 60 and the Bucks from the win.
