Public health school may still come to Milwaukee

UW medical school name change may preclude UWM health school

Mayor Tom Barrett said at last month’s Board of Regents meeting that the first school of public health should be located in Milwaukee rather than Madison, but a name change in Madison may shut the door on the idea.

On Oct. 8, the Board of Regents temporarily approved a name change of the University of Wisconsin Medical School to the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Proposal puts UPass in jeopardy

The UPass could become a thing of the past at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee if Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker has his way.

Walker recently announced a plan to increase the fee schools pay the Milwaukee County Transit System by 16 percent. If this passes, tuition may increase or the UPass might be eliminated from the university.

Committee to explore options in possible merger

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus may expand into Waukesha by July 1, 2007, annexing UW-Waukesha as “UWM West.”

As the merging of the two campuses has been the subject of ongoing debate among politicians, campus administrators and students, a committee was formed at the end of September to study and review the possible merger.

A facelift for Golda Meir Library

By Rachel Dodakian

Program approval for phase one of a two-phase remodeling project designed to vastly reconfigure and improve functioning of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Golda Meir Library was granted recently by the State Building Commission.

Still in its early planning stages, phase one of the remodeling project will work with the existing space of the library’s West Wing to create more room for student group study and enhanced reference and circulation services.

Diversity, inclusive climate key for new chancellor position

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s internal search for an Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Climate is near completion, with a decision expected by early next week.

The decision will come nearly six months after Marquette University hired Keenan Grenell as its provost of Diversity.

Early textbook adoption deadline tomorrow

The Student Association this semester is attempting to boost faculty and staff awareness of the positives to submitting book orders for next semester early in anticipation of the deadline on Thursday, Nov. 3.

If faculty members turn in orders early enough — called early textbook adoption — the University Bookstore can pay more for books it buys back at the end of the semester and can find more used books, leading to reduced costs at the beginning of the next semester.
