New dorms, but for older, non-traditional students

Kenilworth to be complete for fall 2006

Seven months into the Kenilworth project, graduate students, non-traditional students and upperclassmen can apply for fall 2006 student housing on Farwell Avenue and Kenilworth Place beginning next week.

The project is expected to work well for graduate students in the Peck School of the Arts, offering affordable student housing for older students for the first time and in close proximity to their studios in the building next door.

Madison booed; Milwaukee hosts Halloween bash

While out-of-town guests are not welcome at the University of Wisconsin for Halloween events this coming weekend, Milwaukee is offering a 1930s- and ’40s-themed party with drinks, music, celebrities and more.

Vintage cars from the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s are the portal’s entrance to the time warp. Red carpet will reach for the entrance and the stars will reach for the red velvet rope as they stride past those without tickets. Capacity for the event is set for 500 people.

Despite some outcry, indoor smoking remains

Despite objection from Student Association senators and the Norris Health Center, smoking will stay in two areas of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Union.

The Union Clean Air Act would have banned smoking entirely from the Union, including in the Gasthaus and 8th Note Coffeehouse.

Sandburg overcrowding partially alleviated

Nearly 60 students who had been living in overcrowded Sandburg Hall have been relieved of their cramped living situation, leaving 140 rooms in excess of normal occupancy.

Initially, 200 rooms had to be converted in order to accommodate too many students. Singles rooms were turned into doubles, doubles into triples and triples to quadruples.

Regent, attorney talk about future of affirmative action

A regent and Milwaukee attorney called for cooperation and talked Thursday in the Union about two Supreme Court cases that had an impact on the way colleges use race as a possible peg in college admissions.

In those cases, Grutter v. Bollinger and Gratz v. Bollinger, both decided in 2003, the Supreme Court ruled that race could not be used as a quantitative measure in admissions. The cases stem from the University of Michigan’s policy that used race as a quantitative measure.

New men’s organization to spearhead social issues

For years, there’s been a war between the sexes on how men should behave. Everyone has an opinion on the topic, but no one has any answers that could help any of these misguided creatures.

Now, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is leading the way in ending this debate with a new student organization: the Men’s Resource Center.

Golda Meir’s hours result of budget constraints
