Baptist advocates conversion to heterosexuality

A Baptist preacher told homosexuals at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that they can walk away from their unwanted same-sex attractions last Tuesday.

Of the more than 100 people in attendance, at least 30 walked out and many more did not return following a five-minute recess an hour and a half into the speech.

Record number of students pick up UPasses

The number of students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee using bus passes and satellite parking lots has soared to new heights this semester because of rising gas prices and limited on-campus parking.

As of Oct. 4, 16,493 students have picked up their fall semester UPass. This accounts for 62.8 percent of those eligible for the semester-long bus pass.

Former student honored at memorial

Students traveling past a small gathering of family and friends in Spaights Plaza Thursday afternoon paused at the scene, unaware of the memorial for a fellow student who was recently killed in Iraq.

The student was Spc. Michael Wendling, 20, of Mayville, a member of the 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment of the Wisconsin National Guard. Wendling was killed on Monday, Sept. 26, when a bomb exploded along the roadside he and Sgt. Andrew Wallace, 25, were driving on near Basra, Iraq. Wallace was also killed.

For campus, a call for alcohol awareness

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will join over 3,000 campuses across the United States to participate in National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week from Oct. 13 to 20.

With the school year well underway, students are beginning to feel the pressures of classes, work, relationships and life. To deal with the stress, some students turn to alcohol to remedy their problems. Some first-year students begin drinking just to fit in.

Money, not ideas, holds back Student Association approval

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association discussed the organization’s stance on the Milwaukee Commitment Phase II at its meeting Oct. 2.

The Milwaukee Commitment Phase II is an effort to promote diversity at UWM, both among students and faculty.

JMC caps media writing class

Faced with an overflow of students, the Journalism and Mass Communications department decided this fall to cap the number of students who could pass through core classes, making journalism one of the most competitive majors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

In past years any students in JMC 201 – Media Writing who received a B or better passed, but this year teaching assistants are only allowed to pass 20 out of 45 students — fewer than half.
