Panthers still undefeated in league play

Team records two consecutive shutouts

Picking up two victories this weekend was not enough for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s soccer team — they wanted two shutout victories. UWM recorded victories against Cleveland State at Engelmann Field Friday and against Butler in Indianapolis Sunday.

A tough bill to fill

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s basketball coach Rob Jeter had a tough job to tend to when he took the position in April: fill the remaining 20 percent of the Panthers’ schedule with games that will fortify strength of schedule while appeasing Panthers fans.

Jeter’s remedy: stock the schedule with 13 home games — its most since the 2001-’02 season — and road games against national powerhouses Memphis and Wisconsin. The Panthers will also play in an ESPN Bracket Buster game on Feb. 18.

A sweet shut-out

For the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s soccer team, Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Cleveland State meant more than just winning their season opener — it was their seventh straight season-opening win.

“Cleveland State’s field is not an easy place to play,” UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. “We had to stay focused and within our means, which we did.”

NFL: Because the football team up north is trying to get it together, people in this state are tempted to follow the rest of the league. And why shouldn’t they? There are great performances every week by teams such as the Cincinnati Bengals.

Everyone has been waiting to see if former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Carson Palmer was going to step up or fail like past award winners. Well, it seems he needed a learning curve in his first couple of years but is now playing like an elite passer.
