Day-drinkers common at Gasthaus
Students say they only drink a little

The Gasthaus is a favorite hangout for University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students to play pool and darts, eat, watch a sports game and, of course, get a drink — even at noon.
From the time the Gasthaus opens daily at 11 a.m., you can find students drinking beer, sipping mixed drinks and even taking shots of hard liquor.

Journalism professor analyzes ‘Daily Show’
Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” was compared with traditional news media outlets in a spring 2004 Journalism and Mass Communications course.
The course, Mock News and Democracy, offered by professor Paul Brewer, coincided with Brewer’s study of the difference between traditional and mock news media.

Students raise awareness, money in AIDS Walk
Students from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee contributed to the more than 2,500 walkers who took part in the 16th annual AIDS Walk of Wisconsin Sunday, raising more than $383,028.
Despite the pouring rain, walkers pushed through to complete the 6.2-mile walk.

BOSS overspending drives cuts in hours
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Be On the Safe Side shuttle service was forced to cut back its hours this year due to financial complications, causing frustration among students.
The service ran from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. last year, and now runs from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

New program attempts to deter underage drinking
In an effort to combat underage drinking in Milwaukee, Jewel-Osco and Anheuser-Busch are working together to make underage alcohol consumption significantly more difficult.
For the past two years, Jewel and Busch have partnered in the fight against underage alcohol consumption, said Lauri Sanders, director of Public Affairs for Jewel-Osco. Jewel locations in the Midwest, including Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa, host signs warning consumers that if they aren’t 21, they had better forget about buying alcohol.

College Republicans seek to offer alternative
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a “liberal” campus that needs to offer “an alternative” to students, College Republican officers said at their Sept. 21 kick-off meeting.
“There’s more conservative students on campus than people think there are,” said College Republicans President Tom Keeley. “Our top priority is letting other conservative students know that they’re not a super minority here and that they should feel free to speak up.”

Journal Sentinel partnership on hiatus
Free copies of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel are no longer available on campus, as the partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the newspaper is on hiatus.
Through the partnership, which began in September 2004, the Journal Sentinel acted as a sponsor of UWM athletics.

Milwaukeeans less trusting than other Wisconsinites, study shows
A study conducted by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee professor Tom Moore said that Milwaukeeans are less trusting than other Wisconsinites.
Moore, a sociology professor, initiated the study after speaking with coworkers about trust. The study was conducted from January to March of this year, its results were released this summer.

Governors State University student journalists asked the Supreme Court on Sept. 16 to hear an appeal to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling of Hosty v. Carter.
