UWM to celebrate 50th anniversary

Students will be quick to notice that something big is beginning when they get back to campus next year: the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is turning 50.

Amid banners and historical displays, the fall semester will commence into what is promising to be a celebratory year for not only UWM, but the surrounding community as well.

When good times get expensive

In an effort to reduce property damage, theft and sexual assault, the Milwaukee Police Department is cracking down on house parties, officials said.

Last week, Michael Massa, District Five police captain, sent out an alert bulletin to warn University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students of the fines that will be incurred upon police investigation of a house party.

Environmental laws lax, not enforced, lawyer says

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gave a rousing discourse on environmentalism that bled into politics and even capitalism last Thursday as the guest speaker for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

Kennedy, an environmental activist and lawyer, has been fighting for a cleaner, less polluted America for over 20 years.

PantherProf helps students choose classes

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students can read evaluations of professors and their classes before registering through PantherProf, a free Web site that was created last year but is incredibly under-utilized.

“Usage is about 10 percent of all students,” said Raymond Duncan, speaker of the Senate, who helped launch PantherProf. “There are 120,000 surveys done every year; every student might take five or six surveys each.”

SA approves 4th student court justice

The Student Association Senate unanimously approved outgoing SA President Russ Rueden’s latest appointment to the University Student Court at the last SA meeting of the year early last month.

Sen. Neal Michals will fill the fourth student justice seat. As a member of SA, Michals has served as the speaker of the Senate, shared governance director and adviser to three presidents.

Commencement set for graduates

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee commencement ceremonies will be held on Sunday, May 21, at 1 p.m. for baccalaureate students in the U.S. Cellular Arena.

Tickets are not necessary for family and friends. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. The ceremony will last about two hours.

Campus police report

Drugs and alcohol

A 19-year-old male student and a 20-year-old female student were warned for underage drinking on May 4 at 10:25 p.m. The students were seen throwing beer cans onto the playground of Hartford Avenue School.
