UWM: A historical perspective

The evolution of a this campus

By Kate Hofmeister

Considering the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s current enrollment of nearly 28,000 students and its giant 92-acre campus, it’s difficult to believe that it all originated 120 years ago as a simple one-building schoolhouse.

In response to a rising population in Milwaukee, the Wisconsin State Legislature passed a law in 1880 requiring the Board of Regents of Normal Schools to build a teacher preparation school within the city. A touch of the old

By JJ Burseth

No matter where you go in Milwaukee, you’re going to be near a Bella’s Fat Cat. Bella’s successfully re-creates an old-style custard stand and burger joint with its brick building, yellow walls and white uniforms.

The variety of burgers and sandwiches is better at Bella’s than at most burger places, and includes veggie burgers and veggie hot dogs. Also, beef isn’t the only kind of burger they serve — one can also get turkey, chicken or fish. And you get a choice of cheese curds, onions rings or French fries for sides.
