Group rallies for UWM name change

Wisconsin State University their choice; others seek different name

A group of students and faculty members have initiated discussions about changing the name of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to Wisconsin State University.

A measure was introduced at the April 2 Student Association Senate meeting that would have supported changing the name. The measure was amended to have a choice of names put on the SA ballots as a referendum on April 26 and 27.

Regents rename business school

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents on Friday approved a measure to change the name of UWM’s School of Business Administration to the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business.

The measure came as a result of the $10 million donation Lubar made to the school in early February. The donation was the single largest gift in UWM’s 49-year history.

Despite appointments, SA short 14 senators

There are 14 vacant seats on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association Senate, and two positions may not be filled in the upcoming elections, according to the official list of candidates released Monday.

Speaker of the Senate Raymond Duncan said past elections were unsuccessful in filling all the vacant seats, therefore senators are appointed according to the SA Bylaws.

SA members, regents oppose tax amendment

Members of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association traveled to Madison last week to speak in opposition to the proposed Taxpayers Protection Amendment, saying that if the amendment passed, it would significantly increase tuition.

Alicia Bagley, SA communications director, said that she and two other members of the SA, including President Russ Rueden, traveled to Madison to speak during a public hearing on the amendment. Bagley was the only one to speak before the panel, she said.

Lakefront could lead to longer lines

A typical situation unfolds on a chilly Friday morning as students wait at the Capitol-Humboldt UPark lot for a ride to campus.

One bus driver gets out, abandoning his bus to go into the drivers’ station for several minutes. Two more buses arrive. Three buses stand still in the parking lot while students wait outside in the cold.

No sweatshop products at UWM, official says

Several universities across the nation have recently been found to sell logo apparel made in sweatshops, but the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is not on that list.

Among the schools carrying such apparel are Duke University, the University of Michigan, Penn State, Bowling Green State University, the University of California-Berkley, Indiana University and Oregon State University.

Regents to raise awareness of sex assault, harassment

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved the annual Report on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment at its meeting Thursday and Friday, and discussed the need to raise awareness and prevention of sexual assault on UW campuses.

Each campus presented information to the regents regarding the initiatives and strides their campus was making to prevent sexual assault and aid assault victims.

Students spring spruce city

More than 300 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students, faculty and staff gathered Saturday, April 8, to volunteer for the Center for Volunteerism & Student Leadership’s sixth annual Hunger Clean Up.

Volunteers braved the cold weather and started their morning at 8:30 a.m. in Spaights Plaza to hear Chancellor Carlos Santiago speak and send them off to 18 different volunteer sites.
