There is no question about how much I love the East Side. It basically goes without saying.

I’m worried though. The East Side has an alderman who seems to have a strong dislike for most of the people in his district. Ald. Mike D’Amato doesn’t like students and this is obvious from his actions.

New roofs needed for the neglected

On March 18, the front page of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel read, “Mentally ill suffer deadly neglect,” announcing the first installment of Meg Kissinger’s investigative project exposing the dangerous slums in which Milwaukee’s impoverished sufferers of severe mental illness live and die.

Slumlords collect disability checks to house schizophrenic, bipolar and severely depressed adults in illegal rooming houses infested with rats, roaches, human waste and expired food. Tenants dodge drug dealers and thieves in some of Milwaukee’s poorest neighborhoods.

Unclaimed clothing

Every laundry room I have ever been associated with has been a contradiction of fundamentals. Dirty clothes are taken out of a clean bedroom and whisked away to a filthy dungeon from which they emerge unsoiled.

It requires a fairly small effort to maintain the cleanliness of a space whose primary inputs and outputs include hot water, soap, fabric softener, dryer sheets and clean clothes — however that is not the case.
