UWM Police searching for ID theft suspect
Woman may have caused similar incidents at UW, Marquette

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Police Department is seeking a female suspect who is believed to be responsible for at least three thefts from offices on campus that have resulted in the loss of thousands of dollars, officials said.
Officials describe the suspect as a white female, 25- to 35-years-old, with long dark hair. The woman is about 5-feet-9-inches or 5-feet-10-inches tall with a thin-to-medium build, and there may be a scar on the inside of her right wrist.

Man who allegedly forged transcript won’t face court
The Milwaukee County district attorney deferred on March 1 the prosecution of a man charged with forging a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student transcript.
Aldexter Hamilton, a 48-year-old male not affiliated with the university, was arrested after a UWM Department of Enrollment Services employee received a transcript verification for him on Feb. 16.

Blaze ignites over smoking ban
After four hours of fiery public testimony, Milwaukee aldermen appeared to be no closer to an agreement on a proposed citywide smoking ban on Thursday, March 2, voting 3-2 to hold the proposal.
The Milwaukee Common Council Public Safety Committee’s public hearing drew an animated overflow crowd to City Hall. Those in favor of the ban chastised aldermen for their inaction in protecting the public from the effects of secondhand smoke, while those against the ban — mostly bar and restaurant owners — lambasted them for attempting to take away their rights to lawfully operate their businesses.

More university parking, less street parking
When East Side resident Toni McBride comes home at the end of the day, she has difficulty finding an open parking spot near her home on the 3400 block of N. Summit Ave.
With so much traffic commotion on her street, she also worries about the safety of her young children while they are playing outside.

Same-sex marriages amendment heads to ballot
The state Assembly voted 62-31 to approve the Republican-sponsored amendment that would bar same-sex marriages in Wisconsin, sending it to voters in a statewide referendum on the Nov. 7 ballot, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Letting the Sunshine in
The UWM Post is taking part in a nationwide campaign to celebrate open government and raise awareness of the public’s right to know.
Sunshine Week, which lasts from March 12-18, was started last year to open up dialogue on the issue of “sunshine laws.” Sunshine laws are state and federal laws that allow the public access to government records.

Soccer, basketball to help reduce debt
Despite recent athletic success — most notably with the Panthers’ run to the Sweet 16 last year — the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Athletic Department is fighting its way out of a six-figure debt.
The $683,000 debt has been with the department since 2003. The debt has carried over from the 2001, 2002 and 2003 fiscal years, when it was at $1.1 million.

Wisconsin residents gave the University of Wisconsin System a mixed review, according to a new survey released by the Wood Communications Group.

SA wants commission on differential tuition
The Student Association Senate on Sunday passed a measure that supported the creation of a commission to review differential tuition.
The measure calls for the commission, which is to be comprised of those who are for, against and in the middle in terms of differential tuition to present a report to the Senate by its final meeting in April.

UWM working to increase diversity, achievement
Faculty, staff and students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are banding together in efforts to increase student retention and to enhance the diversity and achievement of students.
A conference was held on Feb. 24 as part of the Access to Success program that was instituted by faculty and staff across campus this fall with the goal of retaining freshmen.

UWM student applies for non-traditional regent spot
One University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student applied to the governor’s office for the position of the second, non-traditional student regent seat, officials said.
Erin Celello, a Doyle press assistant, said that the UWM applicant was Pamela Spingola.
