Sunshine week creates awareness

Sunshine Week is coming up in mid-March and will be celebrating its first birthday. The idea behind the week is to attack government secrecy from the municipal level all the way to the Oval Office.
It was started by members of the media, but has recruited students in the last year.

Milwaukee smoking ban not biggest issue
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is about to enforce a smoking ban in the Union. After this initial ban, smokers will be required to be at least 30 feet from any campus building while smoking, and then after that they plan on making the entire campus smoke-free.
As I stood outside with all of my smoking buddies before class, we all discussed the ban and how much it bothered us. While we can understand banning smoking from inside campus buildings makes sense, banning it outside is ridiculous. We’re outside!

Deeper issues with Muhammad cartoons
A lot has been written about the Muhammad cartoons, but there are some facts that need to be made clear before a fair discussion can be had about the “cartoons of blasphemy.”

The possibility of civil war in Iraq
There’s no doubt about it: sectarian violence has been on the rise in Iraq. Since the bombing of the Askariya Shrine (also known as the Golden Mosque), which is an important and sacred place for Shiite Muslims, tensions between Shiites and Sunnis have risen.
Many media outlets have said it before me, but we may be on the verge of a civil war in Iraq.
