Athletic Department in debt

More fans at games would help

At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s basketball team’s home finale on Feb. 18, 361 fans watched the team beat Youngstown State 67-44 at the Klotsche Center.

And it’s that apparent lack of interest that fed into putting the Athletic Department into a debt of $683,000.

State rep says regents should be elected

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents’ plan to cut tuition for out-of-state students has prompted State Rep. Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) to draft a bill proposing that the board members be elected officials, rather than appointees of the governor.

The cut, which was approved in early February, will reduce per-year, non-resident tuition by $2,300 at UW-Milwaukee and $2,000 at every other public university except UW-Madison. The decrease will take effect in the fall if it is given final approval by the board in June.

Student court not functioning

The University Student Court of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is not in operation after the chief justice resigned on Friday, Feb. 24, amid a battle over the court’s budget.

The budget was approved at a Feb. 4 Student Association Senate meeting, but SA President Russ Rueden vetoed it and the Senate will not attempt to override it, Rueden said.

Survey examines UW System performance

A survey conducted by a Madison firm last fall revealed that state residents think the University of Wisconsin System is overpriced, overstaffed and out-of-step with ordinary people, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Friday.

Burglary

A student reported that his car had been broken into in the Sandburg parking garage on Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. The rear passenger side window was broken, causing $350 in damage. A CD player was also stolen.

Study Abroad Fair showcases new opportunities

With hopes of drawing attention to some of the newest additions to the 2006 Study Abroad roster, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Center for International Education Overseas Programs and Partnerships set up tables in the Union on Feb. 21.

The fair drew a lot of interest, as evidenced by the large contingent of students mulling about.

Committee to be reinstated at university level

Students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who wish to voice their opinions about school policy will have a new venue through which to do so following the reinstatement of the university-level Black and Gold Committee.

The committee will be primarily responsible for overseeing Access to Success, a program intended to increase freshman retention rates by assisting incoming and current freshmen students with their college transitions.

SA, Peck dean debate differential tuition

A tense debate over questionable spending ensued between members of the Student Association Senate and a department dean at the SA meeting in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union Ballroom Sunday, Feb. 26.

Robert Bucker, the dean of the Peck School of the Arts, fielded questions for nearly an hour after presenting a budget for the spending of differential tuition that would put the department more than $51,000 in debt.

Dorm residents to be charged after third lock-out

On Thursday, Feb. 23, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee University Housing reinstituted its policy of charging students $50 for repeatedly unlocking dorm rooms.

The policy was briefly suspended because the Sandburg Halls Administrative Council had not been consulted about the change, a SHAC official said.
