Smoking banned from Union
Next step in plan to make UWM smoke-free

Say goodbye to indoor smoking on campus. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union Policy Board unanimously approved a measure Friday to ban smoking in the Union.
The ban, which will take affect April 1, will apply to all areas currently permitting smoking, including the Recreation Center, the 8th Note Coffeehouse, the Gasthaus and the second floor study lounge.

Bush proposes elimination of Perkins Loans
For the fourth year in a row, President George W. Bush has proposed cuts to education funding that will affect college access and affordability for students nationwide unless students speak out.
“For those students who still have unmet needs and families who can’t afford to contribute, the Perkins Loans fill in the gap,” said Bruce Caplin, national co-chair of the Coalition of Higher Education Assistance Organizations (COHEAO) Grassroots Action Network.

Business school receives $10 million donation
Milwaukee business leader and philanthropist Sheldon B. Lubar donated $10 million — the largest single gift in the university’s 49-year history — to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Business Administration last week.
The money will be used to fund new professorships, provide student scholarships and begin a discretionary fund for the school.

UW System regents approve pay raises, cuts out-of-state tuition
The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents unanimously approved on Friday to significantly increase salary ranges for top university administrators and to cut tuition for non-residents.

Task force looking at bachelor’s opportunities in Waukesha
The task force created in response to the proposed merger of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and Waukesha campuses is looking to bring more bachelor’s degree opportunities to Waukesha County, a UW System administrator said.
“The issue is not ‘merger,’ the issue is how to bring more bachelor’s degree opportunities to Waukesha County,” said Donald Mash, the UW System executive vice president, referring to the initial report that was released last week, on the potential merger between the UW’s Milwaukee and Waukesha campuses.

Theft
A student’s purse was stolen from Enderis Hall on Feb. 6 at 12:37 p.m. The purse contained a Social Security card, a credit card, a round-trip airline ticket from Milwaukee to Seattle and $15.

UWM seeks to ‘learn more’ about brand
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with the help of a marketing agency, is assessing its “Learn More” marketing brand campaign and searching for a new brand, officials said.
The Chicago-based agency Lipman Hearne was hired at the beginning of this fiscal year in hopes that it could help transform a new brand to be affiliated with the UWM campus, officials said.

Working to make Milwaukee wireless
The city of Milwaukee could be wireless within 18 months, and for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, that may mean more than just being able to inexpensively surf the Web from almost anywhere.
The Milwaukee Wireless Initiative positions Milwaukee to become one of the first fully wireless large cities in America, at no cost to the city or taxpayers.

MTV launches search for ‘Best Music on Campus’
MTV’s 24-hour college network, mtvU, announced its partnership with Drive-Thru Records to find America’s best college band or artist on Feb. 7.
The announcement for the third annual “Best Music on Campus Contest” invites college students nationwide to submit their original music at mtvU.com for a chance to win a record deal with Drive-Thru Records, as well as a music video premiere on mtvU and mtvU Über, at mtvU.com.
