Relying on advisers not always sound advice

Advisers receive scrutiny each semester for not being effective. Certainly it is reasonable to anticipate that when you go into a meeting with an adviser, you will leave content.

Too often it seems that students are left with an empty feeling, like nothing was really answered to a satisfying extent. A bad advising experience is like getting a bad haircut — there is a level of anticipation going into the experience that is noticeably unbalanced by a negative result.

BOSS needs money; I need a ride

Tuition is always being raised — it seems to be a fact of life. At the beginning of each year, my tuition bill is higher than the last. The problem with this is that while I am paying more to be in college, the services that I am offered as a student keep getting cut down more and more.

Take, for instance, BOSS. I love that we have a service on campus that promotes students getting from place A to place B safely, but since it has suffered significantly from budget cuts, trying to catch a ride on BOSS has become a nightmare.

Hamas not to be trusted

The recent landslide Hamas election victory in the Palestinian territories would appear to be a huge blow to hopes for peace between Israelis and the Palestinians — and it is. But despite the Hamas victory, the truth is the peace process has been dead for years.

The late Yasser Arafat never really accepted Israel’s right to exist. In fact, on May 10, 1994, Arafat described his acceptance of the Oslo Accords as akin to the temporary truce between the prophet Muhammad and the Quraish tribe, which was later broken once Muhammad’s forces became powerful:

Bush doesn’t address all issues

To be honest, earlier this week when I decided I would write a critique of President Bush’s State of the Union address, I didn’t think he’d do that good. But all in all, his speech was fairly decent. In fact, it was a great speech.

It just lacked specificity.
