Raising UWM’s profile good for all

Our chancellor, Carlos Santiago, has been working toward creating a new image for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he said in his plenary address, which is kind of like his own State of the Union address for this university.
I have never met the chancellor; we just exchanged a brief handshake while I was inducted into Golden Key. But without knowing him personally, I can only hope that he really is as dedicated to this university as he says he is.

Concealed weapons simply unsafe
There are some people in this wonderful state of ours who would like nothing more than to allow everyone to carry a concealed weapon anywhere they go: fast food restaurants, the mall, doctors’ offices — anywhere. And where’s the harm, right?
Well, if you’re living in the city of Milwaukee, you can see where the harm could be. In the year 2005 alone, Milwaukee police reported 122 total homicides. And that’s without the right to conceal a weapon.

New housing project has more positives than negatives
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is considering building a student residence just west of the river on North Avenue. The project makes sense and should be completed.
The possible structure is actually quite impressive and it is a situation that benefits multiple outlets. Students would have an additional housing option, the university would make money and jobs would be created. One general negative seems to be impeding a stampede of positives.

For pot smokers, it’s just not fair
It is 2006 and you’d think American society would have a more rational understanding of how marijuana affects people. We laugh and scoff at old anti-pot movies like “Reefer Madness” because of their ridiculous portrayals of how people behave after smoking marijuana.
Meanwhile, large segments of the American public have regularly consumed marijuana for decades, yet society has not devolved into anarchy. The streets are not filled with marijuana-crazed zombies stumbling about moaning, drooling and giggling as they stuff their faces with Cheetos and Snickers bars.
