Students now sweat in the sun
Klotsche Center addition open

Students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are getting into better shape since the new addition to the Klotsche Center opened on Jan. 3. The Pavilion includes a brand new and updated fitness center, gymnasium and track.
“(The new fitness center) makes me a lot more motivated to come here and work out,” said sophomore Lea Savino.

Freshman touched lives with joy and perseverance
Matt Lacke lived just as any other University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee freshman college student, trying to find a niche for himself in the college environment and stressing about coursework.
The only indications of his sickness were his weight — once 165 pounds, he recently seemed to hover around 100 pounds — and skin tone, a pale yellow color.

Non-traditional student added to Regents
Gov. Jim Doyle signed into law late last month a bill that adds a second student to the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents.
The person must be a nontraditional student at least 24 years old, says the bill, signed by Doyle on Dec. 21.

Task force created to bridge communication gaps
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is implementing a task force designed to improve communication between various campus groups and help boost visibility of larger social issues on campus.
The as yet unnamed task force will act as a liaison between organizations and will focus on coordinating support and awareness on issues such as sexual assault, harassment, stalking and domestic violence on campus.

Co-chairs named for fund-raising campaign
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has announced four co-chairs for its first significant comprehensive campaign in more than a decade, with the goal of raising $100 million.
The four co-chairs all received their undergraduate degrees from UWM and currently serve as chief executive officers for four major Milwaukee corporations. The chairs are Gale E. Klappa, chairman, president and CEO of Wisconsin Energy Corp.; Dennis J. Kuester, chairman and CEO of Marshall & Ilsley Corp.; James L. Ziemer, president and CEO of Harley-Davidson, Inc.; and Edward J. Zore, president and CEO of Northwestern Mutual.

Student artwork stolen from Mitchell Hall
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee art student Madeline Martin uses her art as an avenue for social dialogue and critics. Last fall she completed an integrated triptych depicting a loss that occurs when mothers are incarcerated. She planned on making them a part of a series regarding social justice issues.
The paintings of other students are displayed in Mitchell Hall for others to enjoy and critique.

A toolbox and two air pumps valued at $1,000 were stolen from a construction zone at Engineering and Mathematical Sciences sometime from Dec. 28 and Jan. 2.

No surge in early textbook adoption numbers
Early textbook adoption numbers for this semester were about the same as those for the fall semester even though Student Association members campaigned last semester to encourage faculty members to place their orders early.
If faculty members turn in orders early enough — called early textbook adoption — the University Bookstore can pay more for books it buys back at the end of the semester and can find more used books, leading to reduced costs at the beginning of the next semester.
