Nontraditional students add unique voice to Board of Regents

Gov. Jim Doyle recently signed a bill that allows for a nontraditional university student to sit on the University of Wisconsin System’s Board of Regents. This is an excellent move on the System’s part.

The Board of Regents, which is made up of 17 people who have various ties to the community, is responsible for decisions that affect state universities all over Wisconsin. With the passing of Senate Bill 121, there are now two students on the Board of Regents.

Book important despite controversy

James Frey’s memoir, “A Million Little Pieces,” was heavily scrutinized over the winter break. It turns out that Frey embellished elements of his life that did not seem all that important to the overall theme of the book.

Which raises the question: what else is a lie? The answer is simple: it does not matter.

Politicizing the office door

At some point in your college career — if you haven’t already — you are going to have to visit the office of an instructor for one reason or another. For some, particularly incoming freshman or the shy and timid type, this can be a daunting experience.

As a former teaching assistant, I encoutered many a timid student, so I speak from experience.

Wiretapping sets bad precedent

It’s official. President Bush is a criminal. Not for his wars, not for his neglecting the poorest of Americans — although we could argue those are crimes he did commit as well — but for his wiretapping of Americans.

Bush contends that the wiretappings were legal and that he acted within the law. But the law clearly states that the executive branch of this country cannot act without reason, as well as without the consent, of the FISA courts.
