Klotsche addition may open in early January

New fitness center, gym, 652 parking spots

As construction at the Klotsche Center is wrapping up and new equipment is arriving, the enhanced facility is scheduled to open its doors to students early next month.

“Our goal is to open by January 3rd, but we are not 100 percent sure that this will happen,” said Steven Mohar, director of the Klotsche Center.

Creation evangelist derides evolution as ‘dumbest’ theory

A former high school science teacher turned creation science evangelist told an audience at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee last Tuesday that evolution is the “dumbest and most dangerous theory on planet Earth.”

Kent Hovind, founder of Creation Science Evangelism, presented “Creation or Evolution … Which Has More Merit?” to a standing-room only audience in the Union Ballroom on Dec. 6. The event was sponsored by the Apologetics Association, the organization that brought Baptist minister Tim Wilkins to UWM to speak about homosexuality in October.

Fighting for and against the body

Michelle Ellison has a hint of makeup on and leans forward when she talks: “I remember in high school having a cookie. Everyone was home so I couldn’t throw up. I ran seven miles to burn that cookie.”

Elllison, a 22-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee graduate, speaks matter-of-factly and uses her hands to assist her words. She is a recovering bulimic who has struggled with the disorder for nine years. The first time she purged, at age 13, was when she had gone home to cool off after some problems with a boyfriend.

UWM initiates energy audit as part of nationwide effort

A Milwaukee Department of Administration Green Team representative outlined how Milwaukee can solve storm water problems, reduce energy use and improve quality of life at a presentation in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The Green Team is comprised of 11 business, community and environmental leaders who will create a plan for a greener, cleaner Milwaukee.

UWM seeks research associate dean

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has created a new administrative position on campus — the associate dean for Research — that will assist the vice chancellor for Research with duties.

Abbas Ourmazd has been the vice chancellor for Research since July 1 and is the first person to hold that title at UWM. He is also the dean of the Graduate School.
