Sociology professor named new diversity, climate vice chancellor
Lemelle to focus on equity and justice, preparing global citizens

Sociology professor Anthony Lemelle has been appointed the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s associate vice chancellor of Diversity and Climate and will be formally installed on Jan. 2.
“We’re really looking forward to adding Anthony to the Provost’s Office so we can align the Provost’s Office with the chancellor’s goals of advancing diversity and research on campus,” said Provost and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Rita Cheng.

Photo spread causes outcry
A photo spread published in the Nov. 23 edition of the UWM Post has sparked controversy throughout campus, angering students and faculty and resulting in the destruction of UWM Post property and local news media coverage.
The photo spread was an “art piece” by UWM Post Photo Editor Sara DeKeuster “expressing her sexual feelings,” DeKeuster said.

Research Growth Initiative to expand research enterprise
Starting late next month, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will start to build upon a new cornerstone in the vision of Chancellor Carlos Santiago’s entrepreneurial university.
That vision includes the Research Growth Initiative (RGI), a program that aims to expand the university’s research enterprise by investing in proposals by UWM faculty and staff.

Library offers 30 laptops for checkout
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Golda Meir Library began offering laptop computers for check out Monday, Dec. 5.
The Multimedia Library in the East Wing will be offering four-hour checkout for 30 laptop computers. The used Dell Latitude D800 laptops have been purchased by the library from Information & Media Technologies. The computers can be rented without cost. They will be offered for checkout like any book, CD or DVD.

UWM lowers its thermostats
Physical Plant Services staff went across the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus last week to lower thermostats down to 68 degrees, four degrees lower than usual at this time of year.
Gov. Jim Doyle issued an executive order on Nov. 21, that all state agencies lower their thermostats in order to reduce the cost of natural gas, which has increased about 50 percent.

SA Senate approves segregated fee allocations
The Student Association Senate voted on recommendations for segregated fee allocations during a marathon session that started Sunday evening and ended early Monday morning.
At its final meeting of the semester, which lasted eight hours, the Senate approved or amended recommendations for students organizations.

Doyle responds to Wisconsin energy costs
Gov. Jim Doyle summoned an administrative hearing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Continuing Education on Thursday, Dec. 1, in response to the record profits made by oil and gas companies in the middle of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Executives from the world’s five largest oil companies appeared to answer questions from an examiner panel.
