It’s that time of year again.

Christmas music has taken over the airwaves and retail stores. The entire downtown area is cloaked in twinkling lights, wreaths, and red and green. The first snow has fallen, chilling winds have come to town and do not plan on leaving anytime in the near future. Family time will soon transform from being heartwarming to head-aching.

Five minutes to close

It’s been a long night. Business was slow. As the time ticks on, I’m watching my tips divide into a smaller and smaller hourly wage. The last of my tables are finishing their dessert and then I’m home free. Five minutes to close.

Oh, what’s this? Two people just walked into the restaurant. The wife smiles at the hostess and reveals her name while the husband brushes his jacket off looking at the floor.

Are you feeling SAD?

We all have bad days occasionally, and the winter months can be especially trying on our moods, but winter blahs that persist and make dreary days unbearable may indicate a more serious problem.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a lot like depression, only it comes and goes with the seasons. The National Mental Health Association (NMHA) defines SAD as “a mood disorder associated with depression episodes and related to seasonal variations of light.”

The power of a sunny day

In our day and age of massive power consumption, alternative power sources are something that we must start to consider. It is becoming apparent that we can no longer only depend on fossil fuels. The big question is: what now?

Solar power is one of the new power sources that experts in the field are looking into. You see solar energy at work every day in calculators and road signs. Solar energy is sometimes even used in parking lots to power lights.
