Parking restrictions would be good for students

By Post Staff

I am not a fan of Third District Ald. Mike D’Amato by any means. For the most part, I find him to be typical of the out-of-touch, white-collar Democrats who are ruining this city. With that said, the Residential Preferred Parking issue is one of the few things I am able to agree with him on.

For too long, UWM has been overrun by students from suburbs and small towns who want nothing more than to make Milwaukee — the Upper East Side in particular — into

You pack it up, but I’ll stay

By Post Staff

Sean Quast, how can you condemn a city (Counterpoint: Pack it up, Sept. 11) with so much history and beauty based on several problems that many if not most bigger cities have, especially in the so-called Rust Belt of central North America?

Chicago has these same problems; take a nice walk on the south side of Chicago. Ever heard of Newark? It's virtually a statistical fact that in racist America any city with a large minority population is also going to have a higher poverty rate, which leads to the other problems you feebly discussed in your "article."

No really, shut up

By Post Staff

Ms. Wiesend, I couldn't agree with you more (“Shut Your Yapper,” Sept. 25).

I, too, have felt the urge to do serious bodily harm to people who think it's OK to carry on a conversation with friends, text message people and/or answer their cell phone in class. Oddly enough, I had to deal with yapping girls (sitting right next to me, of course) in a criminal justice class I took last semester! I was dumbfounded by their blatant disrespect for the instructor, and overall immaturity. But I couldn't get up the nerve to complain to the professor — or to confront the girls.

Senate speaker should step down

By Post Staff

As a senator, I am calling for Speaker Russ Rueden to immediately resign from the Student Association. The investigation he is responsible for starting has tarnished the Student Association to a state that will take years to repair. No elected official who respects the institution s/he has been elected to serve would remain in office while under such serious investigation.

I am also calling for the bank records of the SA bank accounts to be released immediately. There is no rational reason for refusing to provide the bank account information. This is not a self-governance issue — this is an issue of transparency. SA should not be hiding any information from anyone.

Right back at you, Green Bay!

By UWM Post

Jon Hayden's letter to the editor was insulting and judgmental. Where does he get off pointing the finger at UWM students when practically all college students (and the general citizenry of the United States) are guilty of his accusations?

Apathy and ignorance run rampant in society at large, not just at UWM. So what if we don't have the greatest voter turn-out on our campus? Is it really that much higher at UW-Green Bay?

Sex column represents UWM in a certain light too

By Post Staff

Every week I read The UWM Post in exactly the same way. First, I flip to the back to do the crossword, then I skim from front to back for articles I find particularly interesting. (Who got busted drinking at the dorms? What's the SA up to? How's the UWM hoops team doing?)

After I've read what I deem to be of any worth, I always find time to read Devon Marie Wiesend's weekly column on Sex and Relationships.

‘Conversate’ editorial was racist

By Post Staff

I am student at UW-Milwaukee, and I wanted to a make a comment about the article titled "Let me conversate with you" by Devon Marie Wiesend.

After reading this article I am very offended because it is racist and just plain stupid. A perfect example of this is she makes an assumption that Milwaukee Public Schools are producing graduates that can not speak proper English effectively. This also gives the idea that urban schools which have a large minority population of students are not able to succeed in college.

There are much greater problems at UWM than misuse of word

By Post Staff

Normally I don't read your paper because, frankly, I don't think that it is the best example of exemplary journalism (and it has nothing to do with the fact that it's run by students).

When I received a copy of the piece "Let me conversate with you" in my mailbox, it only reinforced my reasons for why I don't pick up the Post.

Article not well thought out

By Post Staff

I'd take time to write a thoughtful, creative response to the article written by Devon Marie Wiesend, but frankly I’ve already wasted enough of my time.

Her article is ignorant, uneducated and poor in appearance. Much like how she describes users of the word “conversate."

An important subject for a shallow person

By Post Staff

Six student organizations of different cultures met last Wednesday night for a potluck and conversation about improving the campus climate at our university.

The article, “Let me conversate with you,” written by Devon Marie Wiesand in the last issue of the UWM Post was a topic that received heavy discussion from all organizations present.

Ignorance filled in ‘Conversate’ editorial

By Post Staff

The editorial section is a favorite for many readers because the articles deal with personal thoughts on popular issues. They question peoples’ beliefs and give a one-sided view on a diversity of topics.

But diversity is a word not understood to Devon Marie Wiesend. In her article “Let me conversate with you” she discusses her extreme disgust for students who like to socialize without the use of proper grammar.

Smoking causes mingling

I was appalled to read an article last week telling of a smoking ban in the UWM Union, the epicenter of social gatherings on campus. This smoking ban is just another unnecessary obstacle that affects the unity within the student body.

WalkinÂ?Â? around the point

By Aaron Matter

It seems in your article that the War Powers Resolution of 1973 is an essential point on which you base your argument.

Here you say that "Congress reasserted its position in war policy by issuing the War Powers Resolution," but it seems it should read that the War Powers Resolution was an attempt by Congress to limit the powers of the President.

Drinking advice should not be offered by paper

By Jean Rodriguez

I am writing in regards to your Freshman UWM Post. I am a concerned parent with three young adults starting college this fall! I couldn’t help but notice how much info was offered about drinking, the do’s and don’ts, and how not to get caught with it in your book bag. Page 15, tip #6: “Smuggling alcohol”; page 19, “Cheap booze is sometimes best”; and page 20, “Take two and call me in the morning.” Alcoholism is on the up rise; it is no joke, it’s not a game, and it should not be taken lightly! Alcoholism ruins quality life for people or worse yet, takes lives! I have seen both with two friends. Drinking is a choice, not a way of life. It’s OK to say no and to be proud of this choice, and to stand behind it! Life is too short to sell yourself short and to hide behind problems that won’t go away by drinking. So I say and challenge people to stand up to life and its challenges, and take grin and bare it without the booze! We have support groups to help lines as choices when life becomes challenging. There is also CR – Celebrate Recovery – through various churches that I can vouch for.

Summer issue promoted promiscuity

As a busy editor, you are taking a leadership role to your audience, many of whom are young people who are away from the parents who love them for the first time. They are vulnerable, impressionable and easily misled to be less than who they can be.

Parents overreact

By Jill Engl

The parental tirades in the Sept. 4 issue of The Post are misguided and out of touch with modern student life. As one parent wrote in, many college freshmen are “vulnerable, impressionable, and easily misled.” However, parents who choose to continue coddling their college-bound children are crippling their children.

The parents who are “seriously considering a Christian college because of the low caliber” of The Post and its articles are denying the reality of modern student lifestyles. In doing so, they are in turn denying their children the ability to make life decisions and choices, as well as the opportunity to grow through experience.

I was at the UWM Union the other day and picked up the Sept. 4 Post to see how things were going. Everything seems OK except a problem with your "Fringe" page 4 story titled, "A little tomato 101."

University Legal Clinic helps UWM Renters

Student’s who need help in recovering their security deposits can also come to the University Legal Clinic, a UWM student-run resource center. Every year we help students recover thousands of dollars in wrongly withheld security deposits and it is the main legal issue we deal with.

Abortion piece full of Ignorance

By Zach Popp

Once again I have been greatly saddened by the ignorance and overuse of propaganda-caliber rhetoric that has been spewed onto the pages of your newspaper by Joshua McCracken. His latest position on abortion shows little critical thinking and is mostly a conglomeration of the twisted arguments so commonly regurgitated by pro-abortion advocates.

Our constitution was designed to protect the liberties and free-will choices of all Americans; yet only a fool would fall into the trap of viewing abortion as an issue of women’s rights or freedom of choice. Religious texts, logic, history and science clearly declare a baby in utero as a life worthy of recognition, rights and protection.

Don’t let them raise UPASS Fees

By Russel Scott

For all students who use their University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee UPASS – and we are a very large segment of the student population – once again the Parking & Transit Office is trying to find a way to raise your fees. Last year, they attempted to raise the segregated fee students pay for the UPARK shuttle buses, to pay for interest debt payments on a campus parking ramp. That got shot down because I was sitting on the finance committee last year. Apparently now the Parking & Transit Office is putting together the outlines of a proposal through the recently created transportation committee, and in front of the Senate Finance Committee, to assess every student who uses the UPASS, such that we would have to pay a daily surcharge every day that we as a bus rider use the bus.

Subprime loan crisis
In response to your article “The Subprime loan crisis” posted in the Feb. 11th edition of the post, I would like to ask Carlo Albano what has happened to personal responsibility in this country. I bought a house when I was 21 years old; I had “good credit” and did my homework, I didn’t have a college degree and had the same resources as a majority of the people you claim in this article were racially targeted.

Ethanol

I have to congratulate you guys on a tremendous one-sided presentation of the facts on Ethanol. First of all, for all of the research done presenting this article, you managed to misspell "Ethanol" (spelled "Ethynol" on the front page of the Post). Maybe that should've been enough to tip me off that I shouldn't have gone on to read the article, but I did.

I’d like to inform your readers about an important event coming to campus. It’s scheduled to happen before the next issue is to be circulated, which is why I’m writing you this notice minutes before it is to be published and several days after deadline. Please alert all who can attend to do so. We will be meeting outside the Union a day before anyone will ever read this.

Alderman McGee

Unfortunately, the recent shallow article that has become more common than I would care to admit in the Post’s editorial section does not surprise me. The ill-informed and certainly biased article, joining the “let’s bash Michael McGee Jr. choir,” may get past UWM students that know very little about the history of Milwaukee and have no stake in our city. However, Mr. Loper, people like myself that are well aware of the name Leon Todd and the plight of the McGee family in the context of this city believe that people deserve another perspective.

Letter to the Editor - 4/21/08

While I was saddened to hear what the men in these units did (“Listen to the Troops,” April 14), I must say that the vast majority of units serving overseas conduct themselves with dignity and class. I am also upset to see that these soldiers did nothing but watch these events take place. They failed to report any of these actions to their higher chain of command. Action like this is not and should not be tolerated.

I was deployed for over a year and saw no such sort of action as what these attest to. I emphasize that what those soldiers and marines did is pathetic and is not the majority. The majority of troops/units represent the United States of America to the highest standards.

Last week was Earth Day. As I understand it this is a day set aside to step back and take a look at what we're doing to our planet and its environment (we should be doing this every day anyway); so I find it ironic that the powers that be choose this day to turn on the fountain by the library. Now, getting that amount of water that high in the air takes some kind of energy generated by a source that adds to our environmental problems…and for what? To add to the aesthetic quality of campus life? Isn't Earth day a time to stop and re-assess our gratuitous squandering of finite resources. Once again I see phony lip service being paid to an issue that should concern us all.
