16 demonstrators were detained during an education rights protest last Thursday that began in the UW-Milwaukee Union and ended at Chapman Hall, home to the offices of Chancellor Carlos Santiago and other top university administrators.

UW-Milwaukee student government representatives passed six items of legislation Sunday night, including a resolution supporting a Union renovation plan and another supporting the idea of a statewide student association.

A team of UW-Milwaukee students took third place at last week’s Red Bull Schlittentag, or “sledding day”. The event was held at the Alpine Valley Ski Resort in Elkhorn, Wis. Participants came from UW schools from all over the student, and some students from technical colleges joined as well. About 200 people were in attendance.

The UWM Post and UW-Milwaukee reached a settlement last week for a public records lawsuit filed against UWM by the student newspaper in November of last year. The university agreed to disclose all previously requested records in unredacted form. They also agree to pay attorney fees in the amount of $11,764.65 to Godfrey & Khan S.C., the Post’s legal counsel.

A UW-Milwaukee student government committee is hosting a diversity awareness convention Feb. 23 featuring both student and administrative speakers, including UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago.

UW-Milwaukee freshman Sara Haskell was appointed to run this year’s student government elections at Sunday night’s Student Association Senate meeting. Haskell has experience working on election preparations, specifically in the 2008 presidential race.

For the second year in a row, UW-Milwaukee is competing in a 10-week recycling competition called RecycleMania. RecycleMania 2010, currently underway, puts UWM up against 594 other universities across the world. The competition began Jan. 17 and runs through March 27.

A decision by the U.S. Supreme Court has sparked debate over campaign finance both in Wisconsin and throughout the country.
Justices ruled last week that corporations, unions and nonprofits can spend more freely in federal elections. Many believe that the 5-4 conservative majority decision could have a significant impact on the November 2010 congressional midterm elections.

The 8th Note Coffeehouse will remain open until at least May 31 of this year. At its Dec. 11 meeting, UW-Milwaukee’s Union Policy Board (UPB) reconsidered a piece of legislation that sought to repurpose the space currently occupied by the 8th Note, ultimately deciding to allow them to remain there through the end of the academic year.
