The last UW-Milwaukee Student Association Senate meeting of the 2009-10 term saw more laughs than business. Arguably the only item of real news was that legislation relating to the administrative leave of UWM Athletics Director George Koonce will be taken up at the next SA Senate meeting.

Raquel Rutledge of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting April 12 for her work on a child-care subsidy fraud series. Rutledge is a UW-Milwaukee alumna, and she said that she also wrote a couple articles for the Post during her time at UWM.

In an online vote last week, a slim majority of UW-Milwaukee students disapproved of a potential segregated fee increase to fund renovations to the UWM Union. 57 percent of survey respondents said that they would not support an increase of up to $104 per semester to pay for renovation and expansion of the Union.

Seandell Jackson was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole last Friday in connection to the murder of UWM film student Nathan Potter. Potter was shot and killed on the 2500 block of N. Dousman St. July 6, 2009.

Independent Elections Commissioner Sara Haskell was removed from her position in a no confidence vote during Sunday night’s UW-Milwaukee Student Association Senate meeting. The SA Senate also passed an emergency declaration allowing for the University Student Court to run the elections.
