“On your mark, get set, go!”, cried an announcer, officially starting the 4th Annual Panther Prowl 5K run/walk yesterday morning.
Beginning at 10 a.m., participants followed a course that ran through the UW-Milwaukee area neighborhoods and upper lake park. Panther Prowl is organized by the UWM Alumni Association and proceeds benefit scholarship programs.
Hartford Avenue was packed with several members of the UWM dance team in matching track suits and yellow hair ribbons, the women’s and men’s basketball teams, families, couples, students, and individuals of all ages. They stretched, listening to iPods and drinking lots of water in preparation to run or walk the event.
As runners and walkers prepared for the race, a Pre-Race Sports Medicine tent, set up by the UWM College of Health Sciences, offered three specific forms of assistance – “Water, stretching, and bandages”. 1130 WISN, FM 106.1, AM 920 and Aurora all had booths at the event as well.

Over 62 percent of enrolled UWM students in 2007 received financial aid, so the majority of them rely on scholarships and other assistance to go to school. Funds raised by the UWM Alumni Association through Panther Prowl help scholarship students by raising money for financial aid for UWM students.
The Alumni Association’s scholarships include several Alumni Memorial scholarships for students with strong academics, volunteer experience and extracurricular activities. Two full-tuition scholarships are also provided by the Alumni Association to students who are in the top five percent of their class and who maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA.
Awards were given to the top finishers in each category, overall male and female finishers, the largest team, fastest team, and to the individual or team that raised the most pledge dollars.
This year, the top three individual fundraisers were; Joely Urdan with $930, Oody Petty at $700, and Kerri Korinek, who raised $385.

Gee, I hope No. 1274 won. He looks intense. And OF COURSE the top fundraiser would be someone in the Legal Department! Lawyers make scads of dough in every other situation, so why not in university fundraisers?
