UWM possibly buying ‘Pieces of Eight’ site
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Oct. 9 that UWM may be purchasing a downtown property, formerly home to the Pieces of Eight restaurant. As of now, the purchase is just an idea, according to Chancellor Carlos E. Santiago. If UWM buys the lakefront property, it would be used for a proposed School of Freshwater Sciences.
Jeannetta Robinson passes away
Jeannetta Robinson, who served as executive director of Career Youth Development (CYD), died at the age of 68 Thursday Oct. 9. She reportedly passed away during a meeting after suddenly slumping down in her chair. CYD is a non-profit organization serving inner city youth and their families. Robinson founded the Milwaukee program with her mother in 1970.
Gov. Doyle announces medical research collaboration
Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle announced a research partnership Friday Oct. 10. The four parties involved are UWM, Marshfield Clinic, Medical College of Wisconsin, and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. The collaboration, announced Friday morning at the Marshfield Clinic, will seek to make advances in areas related to diseases and treatments.
UWM faculty member interviewed for “Eagle Eye” DVD
UWM School of Information Studies assistant professor Michael Zimmer was recently interviewed for an “extra feature” segment that will most likely be used for the DVD release of “Eagle Eye”. The film opened in theatres Sept. 24 and stars Shia LaBeouf. Zimmer was interviewed on his expertise in communication technologies and surveillance. Source: UWM.edu
