7 goals lead to shutout victory

By Matt Capristo

Six different Panthers found the back of the net including two from freshman Sarah Hagen as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee made Cleveland their home on Friday, picking up a 7-0 win in conference play.

The Panthers (11-2-2, 3-1 in Horizon) wasted little time getting to work as they kept the pressure on the Cleveland St. defense. It did not take long for the Panthers pressure to pay off as Kayla DeJardin ran it in unassisted to score her first goal of the season in the 14th minute. Less than a minute later freshman Keara Thompson found the ball off a bad Viking clear and found the back of the net..

Not too long later Sarah Hagen scored her 12th goal of the year in the 19th minute off a give and go from Kate Megna, and in the 20th minute, 45 seconds later, scored her 20th goal of the year off a give an go from Erin Kreuser. Sarah Talbert finished off the scoring for the first half on a penalty kick in the 39th minute after junior Louise Vraney drew the foul in the box while trying to split two defenders.

Early in the second half freshman Laurel Ragalie took a pass from senior Beth Steuer and rushed up the sideline to beat a defender and score the sixth goal of the game. At this point Head Coach Michael Moynihan decided to pull up and let the reserves play. “Game experience is so much more valuable than training time,” said Moynihan. “As much as we try to replicate a game atmosphere in training, it's never quite the same. So it's nice to score goals early and give others that opportunity.” The Panthers capped off the victory in the 84th minute with a goal from freshman Chelsea Colling, her first, after beating the Cleveland goalkeeper on a shot low and to her left.

Once again the Panthers statistically dominated the game as well with a 16-6 shot advantage and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Erin Kane and Sophomore Leslie Deebach combined for the shutout in goal making two and three saves, respectively.

The Panthers will finish the regular season at home with three games at Engelmann Field starting with a match against Butler on Friday starting at 7 pm.
