Radio dials and airline delays

By Melissa Campbell

Radio Milwaukee, 88.9 FM, is an eclectic mix of new and old, effortlessly blending indie, hip hop, R&B, and world music.

Movement is this week’s theme, from the dial on your old AM/FM radio to the departure times for your flight to Anywhere.

Gold stars: Radio Milwaukee
For the longest time I had given up on the radio. 102.1 FM, in all its independentness, is hit or miss and I really can’t stand top 40. But last year after doing a story I got turned onto another independent radio station, probably the gem of Milwaukee’s dial: 88.9FM.

Radio Milwaukee, 88.9 FM, is an eclectic mix of new and old, effortlessly blending indie, hip hop, R&B, and world music. And the station is really focused on the city; they regularly feature Milwaukee artists on the station, and promote Milwaukee’s many festivals as a way to break down race barriers.

The music is great, and the mission is great, hence the gold stars. Even if you have given up on radio, much as I have, you have to give this station a chance. And if you like what you hear, donate. For more information, visit www.radiomilwaukee.org.

Red Xs: Cancelling airline flights
Okay, I must admit, this one is a little personal. In my defense, however, if you plan on flying in the near future, I think you’ll find this significant. After experience a cancelled (or rescheduled, depending on who you ask) flight recently without notice, I was furious. And after talking to a few people, I realized I wasn’t alone. Apparently some airlines, maybe as a result of the recent economic crisis or just tight pockets, have gotten in the habit of combining partially full flights.

So say if a 9am flight is half full and a 2pm flight is half full, instead of offering the flights customers already booked, the airline will move the 9am flyers to the 2pm flight, and then cancel the 9am flight.

It makes sense moneywise, but it can be a real headache. I think though, that there must be a better way to do it. Maybe contacting flyers and finding out if they would be willing to switch, and then offering them an incentive (free tickets?). Or at least giving people who are moved something.

I got nothing from my airline, and that is why I am giving this practice a red X this week.
