Men’s soccer gets better second half of Wednesday night’s game

By John Parker

If there is a good thing that can be taken out of the game, it’s that the Panthers played very well in the second half.

The Milwaukee Panther Men's Soccer team was unable to recover from an early 3-0 deficit at UW-Madison Wednesday night, and eventually fell 4-0. The loss was the last game in a three game road trip, and it drops the Panthers to 3-5-4 on the season.

Just three minutes into the game, Madison's Colin Monasterio gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead. Goals in the 13th and 16th minutes put the game out of reach before the Panthers had a chance to get any rhythm on offense.

The win was the first in the instate rivalry for Madison since 2004. Last year, the teams played to a 1-1 draw at Engelmann Field. In 2006, the game was played in Madison, and the two teams played to a 2-2 draw. In 2005, the Panthers beat the Badgers 2-0 at Engelmann. Despite the loss, Milwaukee still dominates the series all-time, with a record of 15-13-5 against the Badgers.

The Panthers were unable to take advantage of the few opportunities that they had. Freshman Eric Frazier got a free kick from the top of the 18 yard box in the 60th minute, but he was unable to capitalize. In the 81st minute, Evan Bartzis received a pass from Frazier in good position to score, but Madison goalkeeper Ryan Vint was able to run out and kick the ball out of danger.

If there is a good thing that can be taken out of the game, it’s that the Panthers played very well in the second half. They held Madison scoreless and outshot them during the second half. Milwaukee returns to the friendly confines of Engelmann Field on Saturday to play UW-Green Bay for the Chancellor's Cup as a part of UWM's "Family Weekend," and the game will be aired on Time Warner Cable.
