UW-Milwaukee student Haroon Khan is believed to have been a victim of homicide, police said on Saturday.

Khan, 31, a junior in the College of Letters and Science, has been missing since Wednesday.

On Saturday afternoon, a body was found in a shallow grave in Dodge County, located just northwest of Milwaukee. Police also discovered Khan’s vehicle inside a mini storage unit, which was about 200 meters away from where the body was buried.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Saturday evening that Khan’s family confirmed the identification of the body, although the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department says it cannot make an official identification until this week when an autopsy will be conducted.

According to law enforcement officials, two teenagers tipped off the Watertown Police Department on Friday evening when they reported that a friend of theirs told them he had killed someone. Throughout Friday night and Saturday, investigators executed multiple search warrants and identified three suspects.

The suspects include a 20-year-old man from Watertown and a 20-year-old woman from Delafield, both of whom are being detained at the Dodge County Detention Facility and, according to authorities, are cooperating.

The third suspect, also a 20-year-old man from Watertown, shot and killed himself on Friday night when police approached his home. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Sunday that the father of this suspect owns the mini storage facility where Khan’s body and car were located.

A detective from the UW-Milwaukee Police Department has been assisting Dodge County authorities in the investigation. It is not believed that any of the suspects are UWM students.

On Sunday, campus officials issued statements about Khan’s disappearance.

“The UWM community is deeply saddened by this tragic event,” said Tom Luljak, Vice Chancellor of University Relations and Communications. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”

Tyler Draheim, President of the Student Association, issued the following statement:

"The Student Association is shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Haroon Khan. Haroon had a full and promising life ahead of him, and it is devastating that his life was taken with a such a senseless act of violence. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. The Students of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee send our thoughts and prayers to the Khan family in this trying time."
