First Horizon League loss since 2003
By Matt Capristo
All good things must come to an end, and many good streaks came to and end at the Loyola Soccer Park on Friday as the Panthers fell 0-1 to the Ramblers.
This loss was the first Horizon league loss since 2003 with a league record 31 consecutive games without a loss. It was also only the second time in 25 years that the Ramblers have beaten the Panthers.
The Panthers fresh off receiving the 22nd national ranking from NSCAA this week dominated play for most of the game. The Panthers were able to control possession for most of the game staying on the attack as well as leading in most offensive categories. The Panthers outshot the Ramblers 17-6, and had more corners 9-2.
The Panthers were not without opportunities as they forced Rambler keeper Katie Groesch to make six saves over the course of the match. The defense also played very well. Panther head coach Mike Moynihan was hard pressed to remember any opportunities the Ramblers had in the second half, as the Ramblers fell back into a mostly defensive formation. The Panther defense only allowed four shots on goal and two corners to be taken. Senior keeper Erin Kane made three saves during the course of the game.
The one shot that got through was a off a strong run by Ramblers forwards. In the 21st minute a clear was taken by Rambler midfielder Jackie Vera. She was able to dribble around and through the defense to find herself one on one against keeper Erin Kane. Kane was able to parry the attempt, but Cynthia Morote-Ariza was at the far post to gather the rebound and finish for the only goal of the game.
The Panthers who were chosen by Horizon League coaches to win the Horizon League are now 1-1 in league play which is currently middle of the pack while Loyola (2-0) was picked to finish second is now atop the league after beating their 2nd national ranked team of the season.
The Panthers will look to rebound against Wright State on Sunday.
