Comeback Panthers strike again
Late goal earns team another draw

Stop me if you’ve heard this story before.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s soccer team was on the ropes. After allowing a goal to their opponents early in the match, the Panthers out performed the other team on the field, but the scoreboard told a different story. That is, until once again this youthful squad was able to find the back of the net in the waning minutes of the game.
No, this wasn’t the game against Cal State Northridge. Nor was this the conference opener against Valparaiso. This game was against the team from across the lake, Detroit Mercy.
The Titans were able to score off a marvelous shot from the top of the 18-yard box by Ali Youssef. The ball banged off the inside of the crossbar, and bounced straight down where teammate Renato Susnja was able to sneak the ball past Panther keeper Grant Fernstrum.
Despite having six shots on target in the first half compared to their opponent’s two, UWM went into the locker room trailing by one.
The Panthers came out with a determined look in the eye in the second half, out shooting the Titans 10-4. That determination finally earned them the goal they desired when Freshman Eric Frazier netted his fourth goal of the season.
The play started when Adam Skalecki, the lone senior field player on the squad, carried the ball from midfield into the Detroit Mercy defense. From there, he was able to spot Frazier at the top of the 18, who settled Skalecki’s pass before burying it in the back of the net.
The match went into extra time, but neither team had any real scoring chances and the game ended in a draw.
Other notable stats from the game were the 6 saves made by Fernstrum and the 16 fouls called on the Titans in the second half.
The Panthers are now 3-3-4 overall and 0-1-2 in conference.
