$700 billion bailout passes in House
The House of Representatives voted 263-171 last Friday in favor of a historic $700 billion government bailout for the American financial industry. The approval came after a surprising defeat of an earlier version of the bailout plan on Monday Sept. 29. President Bush, as well as both presidential candidates, advocated for the passing of the bill.
Conservative Union forced to remove McCain banner
UWM officials removed a large John McCain sign, which was displayed in the office of the UWM College Republicans. According to a press release, a clause in the student organizations’ lease says “The only acceptable postings on exterior windows shall be the names and logos of the organization in question.” The sign was removed Wednesday, Oct. 1 at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Mental Health Task Force appointed to UWM
UWM Chancellor Carlos E. Santiago recently appointed a Campus Mental Health Task Force. Co-chaired by Dr. Julie Bonner and psychology professor Vince Adesso, the group will submit a preliminary report to the chancellor by Nov. 30 outlining mental health needs on the UWM campus.
Upcoming UWM “Disability” month events
UWM will host a variety of special events in light of October being National Disability Employment Awareness month. Upcoming presentations, all held in the UWM Union throughout October, include topics like “Disability Etiquette” and “Deaf Americans.”
