UWM Real Estate Foundation selects "Hometown" site for new residence hall

By Kevin Lessmiller

The UW-Milwaukee Real Estate Foundation has chosen the Mandel Group's "Hometown" site proposal for its new residence hall facility, set to open for student housing by Fall 2010, according to a press release sent from 3rd District Alderman Nik Kovac's office today.

The decision comes almost a month after the third and final public meeting regarding the new residence hall Sept. 4. The "Hometown" site, named after the Hometown gas station currently being demolished at the site, lies at the corner of North Ave. and the Milwaukee River – directly across the river from UWM's Riverview Residence Hall.

"The stage the UWM Real Estate Foundation is at now is typically the starting point of the public approval process", said Kovak in the press release, which was sent shortly before 2:30 p.m. today, Wednesday Oct. 1.

Also according to the press release, the Mandel Group has redesigned their proposal to meet river valley zoning guidelines established by the Milwaukee River Work Group. At the Sept. 3 public meeting, featuring the Mandel Group's proposal and held in the nearby Urban Ecology Center, Sura Faraj of the River Work Group had voiced concern over the "Hometown" proposal.

At the start of the fall 2010 semester, over 1,000 UWM students are expected to be living in relatively close quarters along the Milwaukee River, between Riverview and the Mandel Group's new residence hall facility.

We should call it BiggerView. How do you like that neighbors? Piss off Rosen.

I love how everyone talks about how the neighbors have so much power, and can stop whatever they want, yet they can't stop UWM from doing anything.

Lights on the soccer field? Done.

RiverView? Done.

Klotsche Center Pavilion? Done.

Mandel's new dorms? Coming soon.

Face it, neighbors, UWM isn't going anywhere. And we'll work with you to get the students to treat the neighborhood better, but capping enrollment is a bad idea, moving engineering to Tosa is a bad idea, and standing in the way of new UWM buildings near the Kenwood campus is a bad idea.

Unless you have lived here since before 1956, this university has been here longer. Whether or not the school's students have gotten more unruly in the past 10 years, you moved in to your home knowing it was a 4-year university of 20,000 students, with a growing number living on campus each year. It's your fault if you "didn't believe the school would grow" to where it is.

Face it. UWM is on the cusp of being a top-flight research university with a student body made up almost completely of 18-24 year old college kids. Sorry.

Work with the university, not against it. Because trying to obstruct this school in this neighborhood is like trying to stand in front of the wave in "Deep Impact". It ain't gonna happen.
